**Daniel locked his pregnant wife in a burning room… But the maid shielded herself with her body just before the explosion.**

They locked her, pregnant, inside a burning room as the fire advanced towards her.

Elena regained consciousness on the kitchen floor. Her hands were tied behind her back and a rope was wrapped around her ankles. She was eight months pregnant.

The curtains were burning, the fire was already spreading through the wooden furniture, and a thick cloud of smoke was descending from the ceiling.

—Help! My baby!

She tried to get up, but the ropes prevented her. She rolled to one side just as a burning board fell next to her dress.

On the other side of the glass door stood Victoria, his mother-in-law. She held the only key in one hand and watched the fire without showing any emotion.

—No one will open that door!

—Your grandson is in here!

—That child should never have existed.

That very morning, Elena had discovered her late father-in-law's true will. The document stipulated that the first grandchild would inherit the majority of the family business. Until he reached the age of majority, his mother would manage all the shares.

When the baby was born, Victoria and Daniel would lose control of the fortune.

Elena had also found reports proving that the two of them had been embezzling money from the company for years. She was about to send the evidence to her lawyer when someone hit her from behind.

Now she understood that her mother-in-law was planning to make her death look like an accident caused by the fire.

"The police will find the documents," Elena said.

Victoria smiled.

—Your phone and all the copies are inside that kitchen. The fire will take care of the truth.

At that moment, Rosa appeared at the end of the corridor. The old servant saw Elena tied up amidst the flames and ran towards the door.

—Mrs. Elena!

Victoria tried to stop her.

—Don't come any closer!

Rosa pushed her against the wall. The mother-in-law fell to the floor and dropped the key. Both women tried to reach it, but the maid was faster.

Rosa opened the door and went into the kitchen.

The heat was unbearable. She covered her mouth with her apron and crouched down and walked towards Elena.

—Rosa, get out of here!

—Not without you.

The old woman took a knife from the counter and cut the ropes around her wrists. Then she freed her ankles, soaked a towel under the tap, and covered the young woman's face with it.

—Lean on me! Let's get out!

Elena tried to get up, but felt a strong contraction.

-Can't…

—Yes, you can. Put your arm around my shoulders.

Rosa held her by the waist and began to guide her toward the door. Flames blocked part of the way, but there was still a narrow passage along the wall.

Then Daniel appeared.

He entered the hallway and found his mother on the floor.

Elena felt relieved when she saw him.

—Daniel, help us! Your mother started the fire!

Her husband looked at the kitchen, then at the documents that were beginning to burn on the table, and finally at Victoria.

"He found the will," his mother said. "He also saw the transfers."

—You told me you had destroyed the copies.

—Rosa arrived before the job was finished.

Elena realized that Daniel knew the whole plan.

—Did you want to kill us too?

"I wasn't going to let my mother lock you up here," he replied. "But now it's too late."

For a moment, Elena thought he would change his mind. However, Daniel closed the glass door and turned the key.

Rosa ran towards her and hit her with both hands.

—Open immediately!

Daniel put the key in his pocket.

—When the firefighters arrive, we'll say that Elena was cooking and that a leak caused the fire.

—Nobody will believe that!

—There will be no one left who can deny it.

Daniel approached the gas system located next to the exterior wall. He opened the metal cover, damaged one of the connections, and turned the valve.

Inside the kitchen, Rosa heard a whistle.

The smell spread quickly.

"The gas!" he shouted. "We have to get out now!"

Daniel stepped back with his mother.

"You can still stop this!" Elena pleaded. "He's your own son!"

—That son would inherit everything and send me to prison before he learned to walk.

Rosa grabbed a chair and banged on the glass door. The first impact left a small crack.

He hit her again.

The crack began to spread.

Elena leaned against the table, struggling to stay conscious. The smoke burned her eyes and she could barely breathe.

"Louder!" he shouted.

Rosa struck a third time. A fragment of glass fell to the ground, but the opening was still too small.

The flames were advancing towards the gas connection.

—It's going to explode!

Rosa looked at the door, then at the fire, and finally at Elena. She realized they wouldn't make it out in time.

He pushed her against the far corner, placed a wet blanket over her, and covered her with his own body.

—Protect your belly.

-And you?

—I will protect you.

A flare reached the gas.

The explosion shook the entire mansion.

The glass door was blown out into the hallway. The windows shattered and part of the kitchen ceiling collapsed.

Daniel and Victoria fell to the ground. For several seconds, only the crackling of burning wood could be heard.

Daniel got up slowly.

Are they dead?

Victoria observed the destroyed kitchen.

—Nobody could survive that.

They both ran towards the exit before the fire reached the rest of the house.

But inside the kitchen, under a fallen section of the marble table, Rosa opened her eyes.

The shockwave had lifted the table, and its heavy surface created a small protective space above them. The wet blanket and Rosa's body absorbed much of the heat.

"Mrs. Elena..." he whispered.

The young woman did not respond.

Rosa placed a hand on his neck. He still had a pulse.

Then he touched her belly.

The baby moved.

"They're both still here," she said with tears in her eyes.

The elderly woman had her leg trapped under a beam. She tried to free herself, but the pain was unbearable.

He heard sirens in the distance.

Before entering the kitchen, she had activated the emergency button hidden in her brooch. The device belonged to the mansion's security system and had sent an automatic alert to the fire department.

It had also transmitted the sound.

The entire conversation with Daniel and Victoria had been recorded.

The firefighters arrived a few minutes later. They found Victoria and Daniel in the garden, pretending to be desperate.

"My wife was cooking," he said. "There was an explosion. We tried to save her, but we couldn't get in."

A firefighter approached from the house.

—We found two women alive.

Daniel's face lost all color.

Rescue teams first pulled Elena out. Then they freed Rosa. The elderly woman was seriously injured and had suffered burns, but she was still conscious.

As he passed by Daniel, he opened his hand.

Inside was the kitchen key.

"You locked her up," he said. "And this proves it."

Daniel tried to snatch it from her, but a police officer stopped him.

Victoria claimed that Rosa had started the fire, but the security camera recorded Daniel's voice as he tampered with the gas system. Exterior cameras also showed mother and son walking away before the explosion, without calling for help.

Elena was taken to the hospital. Doctors performed an emergency cesarean section. The baby was born prematurely and needed breathing assistance, but survived.

Rosa remained unconscious for several days.

When he finally woke up, he found Elena sitting by his bed with the child in her arms.

—I want to introduce you to Mateo—the young woman said. —It means “gift from God.”

Rosa smiled weakly.

-It's lovely.

—He is alive because you covered him with your body.

—And you are alive because you never stopped fighting.

Daniel and Victoria were charged with attempted murder, fraud, and conspiracy. The investigation revealed their connection to the mysterious death of Daniel's father. He had threatened to report them shortly before suffering a suspected domestic accident.

Both were sentenced to long prison terms.

The true will was recognized. Elena managed the company on Mateo's behalf, but she sold the ruined mansion. In its place, she built a shelter for women and children who needed to escape violent homes.

Rosa became Mateo's godmother and the first director of the shelter.

Years later, Elena kept the heat-warped key in a glass case. Next to it was a small plaque:

“A closed door can stop a body, but it cannot stop someone who decides to enter to save a life.”

Victoria had believed that the fire would destroy the will, the evidence, and her own grandson.

Daniel had thought that an explosion would turn a murder into an accident.
