We moved to a new house, but on the very first night our dog started barking desperately at an old painting hanging on the wall, hidden under a thick cloth. When I finally tore the cloth back, I was completely terrified to discover what was hiding behind it…

My husband and I had recently moved into a large, old house that we bought for an incredibly good price. The house was beautiful, spacious, and fully furnished. The previous owners had rushed the move and left almost everything inside, including several antique paintings. One of them was hanging in the living room, completely covered with a heavy, thick cloth. We were told it was an old family heirloom that was best left untouched, and at the time, those words didn't seem strange to me.

We had a very calm dog. For several years he had never barked without reason, so his behavior that first night worried me a great deal.

As soon as he entered the room, he stared intently at the covered painting. A few seconds later, he began barking loudly, growling, and standing on his hind legs, trying to tear the cloth off the wall.

"What's wrong with you today?" I asked, irritated.

But the dog didn't even look at me and continued scratching the wall.

I approached him and grabbed him by the collar.

—Enough! Calm down right now! What did you see there?

The dog broke free from my grasp and lunged back at the painting. It was barking so loudly that the sound could be heard throughout the house.

My husband just laughed.

—It probably smells like old fabric. Ignore it.

But during the following days everything got worse.

Every time the dog passed by that wall, he behaved exactly the same way. He could sit for hours in front of the painting, without taking his eyes off it, and at night he would suddenly get up, run into the living room, and start barking desperately.

After two days I completely lost patience.

—That's enough! I can't take it anymore!

I approached the wall, grabbed the edge of the thick fabric, and ripped it off.

Beneath her was a huge antique painting, but a second later I understood why the dog couldn't calm down and I was completely shocked.

At first I thought it was the wood of the house creaking, but the sound repeated itself.

We carefully removed the painting from the wall and discovered a small gap behind it. Inside was a cardboard box that, it seemed, had been accidentally covered by the painting during a repair many years ago.

Yes, this ending will be much stronger and more logical. This is the continuation in the same style:

A week later I completely lost my patience.

"That's enough! Calm down already!" I yelled angrily at the dog. "Why are you so obsessed with this painting?"
