Chapter 3 – The Woman Who Wanted the Baby Gone

Chapter 3 – The Woman Who Wanted the Baby Gone

Posted July 27, 2026 · 7 min read Chapter 3 – The Woman Who Wanted the Baby Gone

The first night in the hospital felt longer than the fall itself.

Machines hummed softly.

Rain streaked the windows.

Every few minutes, Claire woke with a start, her hand flying instinctively to her stomach.

Each time...

The baby answered with a tiny kick.

Alive.

Still alive.

She whispered the same words over and over.

"We're okay."

"I'm here."

"No one will hurt you again."

Whether she was comforting the child...

Or herself...

She no longer knew.

At seven the next morning...

A quiet knock came at the hospital door.

"Come in."

Adrian entered, his left arm secured in a sling.

Dark circles rested beneath his eyes.

He clearly hadn't slept.

In one hand he carried two cups of coffee.

In the other...

A small paper bag from the hospital gift shop.

"I wasn't sure what you liked."

he said awkwardly.

"So I bought everything they had."

Claire looked inside.

Crackers.

Fruit.

A tiny stuffed elephant.

She couldn't help smiling.

"You bought a toy."

Adrian glanced at the elephant.

"I panicked."

"I've never visited a pregnant woman before."

Claire laughed for the first time since the fall.

The sound surprised both of them.

"You should be resting."

she said.

"So should you."

"I wanted to make sure you were all right."

Claire looked at him carefully.

"Your shoulder?"

"It hurts."

"And your ribs?"

"They remind me every time I breathe."

She frowned.

"You should've stayed home."

He smiled faintly.

"I don't think home is the safest place for either of us right now."

Silence settled between them.

Comfortable this time.

Not awkward.

Not forced.

Finally...

Claire asked the question she had been avoiding.

"Why were you really in Greenwich?"

Adrian looked toward the window.

"I wasn't supposed to arrive until midnight."

"So why did you?"

"My assistant called yesterday morning."

"What happened?"

"My grandmother insisted I postpone my flight."

Claire frowned.

"And?"

"I did the opposite."

"Why?"

He hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

"Because Eleanor almost never tells me what to do."

"When she suddenly wanted me to stay away..."

"I knew something was wrong."

Claire felt a chill run through her.

"She didn't know you'd be there."

"No."

"If you hadn't changed your flight..."

He finished the sentence for her.

"You would've hit the marble."

Neither of them spoke again.

Some truths didn't need repeating.

A few minutes later...

Officer Megan Brooks arrived carrying a thick folder.

"Good morning."

She pulled up a chair.

"I'm afraid I need another statement."

Claire nodded.

"I'll answer whatever I can."

The officer switched on a recorder.

"Let's begin with one simple question."

"Why did Mrs. Eleanor Blackwood want your baby gone?"

The room became very still.

Claire closed her eyes.

When she finally spoke...

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"It started the day she found out I was pregnant."

Four months earlier...

Claire had walked into Blackwood Manor holding an ultrasound picture.

She had imagined happiness.

Nathan had cried when she told him.

He kissed her forehead.

Promised they'd tell the family together.

He believed they would celebrate.

He was wrong.

Eleanor had stared at the ultrasound in silence.

No smile.

No congratulations.

Nothing.

Finally she asked only one question.

"Has anyone else seen this?"

Claire frowned.

"Not yet."

Eleanor folded the picture neatly.

"Good."

Then she handed it back.

"You'll need another appointment."

Claire blinked.

"Why?"

"Because accidents happen."

Back in the hospital...

Officer Brooks looked up sharply.

"What did you think she meant?"

"I didn't understand then."

"I do now."

Claire continued.

"The next day..."

"Eleanor invited me to lunch."

The restaurant overlooked the harbor.

Expensive.

Private.

No witnesses close enough to hear.

Halfway through the meal...

Eleanor slid an envelope across the table.

Claire opened it.

Inside was a cashier's check.

Two million dollars.

"I don't understand."

Claire had whispered.

"You will."

Eleanor smiled politely.

"Take the money."

"Leave Connecticut."

"Never contact Nathan again."

Claire stared at her.

"I'm carrying his child."

"I know."

"Then why would I leave?"

"Because children complicate inheritances."

Back in the hospital...

Officer Brooks wrote quickly.

"Did you keep the check?"

Claire shook her head.

"I tore it in half."

Adrian listened silently.

Every sentence chipped away at the image he had carried of Eleanor his entire life.

The elegant hostess.

The charitable widow.

The respected family matriarch.

None of those women sat inside this story.

Claire continued.

"After I refused..."

"The threats became quieter."

"Harder to prove."

Her brakes failed twice.

The mechanic called it strange.

Someone entered her apartment while nothing valuable was stolen.

Only the ultrasound photographs disappeared.

Anonymous letters arrived.

Each carried the same message.

Leave while you still can.

"I thought I was imagining it."

Claire admitted.

"I thought grief was making me paranoid."

Officer Brooks frowned.

"Grief?"

Claire looked down.

"Nathan."

Adrian finally interrupted.

"What about Nathan?"

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"He died."

Silence.

Adrian stared at her.

"What?"

Three months earlier...

Nathan Blackwood had been killed in what police ruled a single-car accident.

His sports car had gone through a guardrail on a coastal highway.

No witnesses.

No survivors.

The investigation ended within two weeks.

Everyone called it tragic.

No one questioned it.

Until now.

Adrian felt his blood run cold.

"No one told me."

"You were overseas."

Claire answered quietly.

"Eleanor handled everything."

Officer Brooks slowly closed her notebook.

"Miss Whitmore..."

"When did you last see Nathan?"

"The night before he died."

"What happened?"

Claire swallowed.

"He told me he was changing his will."

The room fell completely silent.

"He said our baby deserved protection."

"He planned to meet his attorney the next morning."

Instead...

Nathan never reached the meeting.

Adrian leaned forward.

"Did my grandmother know?"

Claire looked directly into his eyes.

"She was standing outside the study."

"You saw her?"

"I heard everything."

A nurse entered briefly to check Claire's blood pressure.

No one spoke until she left.

Finally...

Officer Brooks asked quietly,

"Do you believe Nathan's death was an accident?"

Claire hesitated.

For months...

She had tried not to think the unthinkable.

Now...

After being pushed from a balcony...

The question no longer felt impossible.

"I don't know."

she whispered.

"But I no longer believe in coincidences."

Just then...

A knock interrupted the interview.

A hospital administrator entered.

"Excuse me."

"There are two visitors asking for Miss Whitmore."

"I told them she isn't receiving guests."

"They insisted."

Officer Brooks frowned.

"Who are they?"

The administrator looked down at the visitor log.

"A lawyer."

"And..."

"...Mrs. Eleanor Blackwood."

Claire's face drained of color.

"No."

She whispered.

"I don't want to see her."

Officer Brooks stood immediately.

"You won't."

She turned to the administrator.

"Inform Mrs. Blackwood that this is now an active criminal investigation."

"She is not to contact the victim."

Minutes later...

Down the hallway...

Eleanor stood perfectly still as Officer Brooks approached.

"I'm afraid you'll have to leave."

Eleanor smiled politely.

"I only wanted to check on Claire."

"Save it."

the officer replied.

"You can speak through your attorney."

For the first time...

The smile slipped.

Eleanor's eyes turned cold.

"You have no idea what you're interfering with."

Officer Brooks met her gaze without flinching.

"No."

"I think I do."

As Eleanor walked toward the elevators...

She made a single phone call.

Her voice was calm.

Controlled.

"The girl is talking."

A pause.

"No."

"The hospital isn't safe anymore."

Another pause.

Then she said the words that sent a chill through the man on the other end of the line.

"If Claire survives..."

"...everything we've protected for twenty-five years dies with her."

She ended the call.

Neither she nor anyone else noticed...

A young nurse standing just around the corner.

Frozen.

Still holding a tray of medication.

She had heard every word.

And before the day was over...

She would become the first person outside the Blackwood family to realize that Claire's fall from the balcony...

Had never been the beginning.

It was only the latest chapter in a conspiracy that had started decades earlier.
