CHAPTER 2 — The Woman Everyone Believed

Ethan didn't answer the message immediately.

He read it three times.

Your sister-in-law never checked into the hospital yesterday. She went somewhere else.

He slowly locked his phone.

For weeks, he had been telling himself he was imagining things.

Now...

For the first time...

His instincts had evidence.

Not proof.

But enough to make him keep looking.

Across town...

Nathan was standing inside an expensive baby boutique.

He smiled as he held up two tiny sweaters.

One blue.

One yellow.

His assistant laughed.

"You've bought enough clothes for triplets."

Nathan grinned.

"I know."

"I just..."

He looked down at the tiny sweater in his hands.

"...can't stop imagining holding my son."

"What if it's a girl?"

Nathan smiled even wider.

"Then she'll have her father completely wrapped around her finger."

The saleswoman folded the clothes carefully.

"Congratulations."

Nathan's face lit up.

"Thank you."

He meant it.

He had never been happier.

At the mansion...

Vanessa stood in front of the mirror.

She adjusted the silicone belly beneath her loose designer dress.

Carefully tightening the elastic straps.

Checking every angle.

No wrinkles.

No visible seams.

Perfect.

She slipped on an oversized cardigan.

Then practiced smiling.

Gentle.

Maternal.

Fragile.

The woman in the mirror looked exactly like an expectant mother.

She reached into a drawer.

Inside was a small notebook.

Every page contained dates.

Doctor appointments.

Pregnancy milestones.

Symptoms.

Weight gain.

She had memorized every detail.

Every answer.

Every lie.

That afternoon...

Nathan returned home carrying more shopping bags.

"I have a surprise."

Vanessa smiled.

"You've already bought enough."

"I couldn't help it."

He placed a tiny stuffed elephant into her hands.

"It was the last one."

She forced herself to smile.

"It's adorable."

Nathan wrapped his arms around her.

"I can't wait to meet our baby."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

For one brief second...

His words pierced through her carefully built act.

Then she buried the feeling.

That evening...

The Bennett family gathered once again.

Nathan's mother, Evelyn, insisted everyone celebrate.

"My first grandchild deserves a toast."

Crystal glasses were raised around the table.

Everyone smiled.

Everyone...

Except Ethan.

He quietly watched Vanessa.

As the evening continued...

He noticed something strange.

Every time someone looked at her...

Her hands rested protectively on her stomach.

But whenever she thought no one was watching...

She completely forgot about it.

No unconscious gestures.

No instinctive movements.

Only calculated ones.

Dinner was interrupted by Evelyn's excitement.

"I've already booked a luxury maternity photographer."

Vanessa nearly dropped her fork.

"What?"

"The photoshoot."

"It'll be beautiful."

Nathan laughed.

"Mom..."

"It's still early."

Evelyn smiled.

"Nonsense."

"I want pictures before the baby arrives."

Vanessa quickly spoke up.

"I don't think I'm comfortable with that."

Nathan looked surprised.

"Why not?"

"I..."

She searched for an excuse.

"I've gained too much weight."

Evelyn laughed.

"That's exactly what every pregnant woman says."

Nathan reached for Vanessa's hand.

"You'll be beautiful."

Vanessa smiled weakly.

"We'll see."

Across the table...

Ethan noticed a single bead of sweat rolling down her temple.

Later that night...

Ethan walked into the kitchen.

Vanessa was pouring herself a glass of water.

She froze when she saw him.

Neither spoke.

Finally...

Ethan broke the silence.

"How far along are you now?"

Vanessa answered immediately.

"Twenty-three weeks."

"No complications?"

"No."

"Morning sickness?"

"Not anymore."

He nodded.

"What hospital?"

She hesitated.

Barely half a second.

But Ethan noticed.

"Saint Andrew."

He smiled politely.

"My friend works there."

Vanessa's fingers tightened around the glass.

"Oh."

"What department?"

"Obstetrics."

Vanessa forced a smile.

"Maybe you've seen my doctor."

"Maybe."

He held her gaze for another moment.

Then quietly walked away.

Only after he disappeared did Vanessa realize...

She had stopped breathing.

The next morning...

Ethan visited Saint Andrew Medical Center.

He wasn't there to accuse anyone.

He simply approached the reception desk.

"My sister-in-law is expecting."

"I wanted to surprise her with flowers."

"Could you tell me which doctor she's seeing?"

The receptionist searched the system.

One minute passed.

Then two.

Finally she looked up.

"I'm sorry."

"We don't have any obstetric patient named Vanessa Bennett."

Ethan smiled politely.

"Could she be registered under Vanessa Clarke?"

The receptionist searched again.

Nothing.

"No."

"There isn't anyone by either name."

Ethan thanked her and walked outside.

His heartbeat had become noticeably faster.

Vanessa had lied.

Not once.

Twice.

He immediately called the private investigator.

"I need everything."

"Hospital visits."

"Financial records."

"Surveillance."

"I want to know where she's really going."

The investigator answered without hesitation.

"I've already started."

"I'll keep following her."

Meanwhile...

Vanessa sat alone inside a quiet café across town.

She checked her watch repeatedly.

Ten minutes later...

A man in a dark baseball cap entered.

He sat across from her.

Without greeting her...

He slid a sealed envelope across the table.

Vanessa opened it.

Inside were several printed ultrasound images.

Along with a doctor's report.

Everything looked genuine.

Official hospital logo.

Medical terminology.

Even the physician's signature.

She looked up nervously.

"These are perfect."

The man smiled.

"They should be."

"We've done this before."

Vanessa handed him a thick envelope of cash.

"No mistakes."

"There can't be."

The man slipped the money into his jacket.

"There won't be."

He stood.

Then quietly disappeared into the crowd.

Neither of them noticed...

A camera lens pointed directly toward their table from across the street.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Every exchange had been photographed.

Every face captured.

Inside the parked car...

The private investigator lowered his camera.

Then picked up his phone.

"Ethan."

"I've got something."

"What?"

"Your sister-in-law just paid a man for fake medical documents."

Silence filled the line.

Finally...

Ethan answered.

"Follow him."

"I don't care where he goes."

"I want to know who he really is."

The investigator started his engine.

"I'm already on it."

Neither man realized...

The stranger wasn't working alone.

May you like

And the lie surrounding Vanessa's pregnancy...

Was far bigger than either of them had imagined.
