THE GARBAGE BABY / Chapter 2 / 3

Part Two: The Man in the Gray Suit

Part Two: The Man in the Gray Suit

The ballroom exploded into chaos.

Guests who had spent the evening discussing investments and charity projects now whispered behind trembling hands. Camera flashes burst from every corner as reporters, invited to cover the gala, rushed toward the center of the room.

"Move back!"

"Give the police some space!"

Detective Amelia Brooks raised one hand, signaling her officers to secure the ballroom doors.

"No one leaves."

The room instantly fell silent again.

Near the back wall, the man in the gray suit stopped walking.

His hand tightened around the handle of a leather briefcase.

He did not turn around.

He simply stood still.

Detective Brooks noticed him immediately.

"Sir."

The man slowly looked over his shoulder.

"Would you mind staying where you are?"

He forced a smile.

"Of course."

But something in his eyes betrayed him.

Fear.

Raw, unmistakable fear.

Meanwhile, Daniel Whitmore stood frozen.

The photographs lay scattered across the marble floor like broken pieces of his life.

He looked at his wife.

Then at the sleeping baby.

Finally...

At the little girl.

"What is your name?" he asked gently.

The girl looked down.

"My name is Lily."

"How old are you, Lily?"

"Ten."

"Where are your parents?"

Lily hesitated.

"I don't know."

"You don't know?"

She shook her head.

"I've lived at Saint Martha's Shelter since I was six."

Several guests lowered their heads.

The shelter was known for taking in abandoned children.

Lily continued quietly.

"I collect bottles after school so I can buy diapers."

Daniel frowned.

"For your little brother?"

She smiled sadly.

"He's not my brother."

"I just couldn't leave him."

The ballroom became silent once more.

One elderly woman quietly wiped away tears.

Another guest whispered,

"That little girl has done more for that baby than anyone else."

Detective Brooks knelt in front of Lily.

"You've been taking care of him all this time?"

Lily nodded.

"The shelter helped."

"The nurses checked him."

"But I never told anyone where I found him."

"Why not?"

Lily looked toward Eleanor.

"Because I heard her."

Detective Brooks leaned forward.

"What did she say?"

Lily swallowed.

"She told the man..."

"'If anyone finds him... he'll die before he remembers us.'"

A ripple of horror swept through the ballroom.

Daniel stared at Eleanor.

"There was another person?"

Eleanor closed her eyes.

She said nothing.

Detective Brooks slowly stood.

"Mrs. Whitmore."

"This is your last opportunity."

"Who was with you that night?"

Silence.

"Was it your husband?"

"No!"

Eleanor shouted immediately.

Daniel stepped backward in shock.

"I had nothing to do with this."

"I know."

Detective Brooks answered calmly.

"The surveillance footage confirms Mr. Whitmore remained inside the charity banquet that evening."

Daniel looked confused.

"What?"

"The car left without him."

He turned toward Eleanor.

"You told me you had a migraine."

"I..."

"You said you were going home."

Tears rolled down Eleanor's cheeks.

"I lied."

Daniel felt his heart sink.

"Why?"

She couldn't answer.

Suddenly...

A loud crash echoed from the rear of the ballroom.

Everyone turned.

The man in the gray suit had dropped his briefcase.

Without warning—

He ran.

"Stop him!"

Detective Brooks shouted.

Police officers rushed after him.

The man pushed through a side exit into the gardens.

Daniel instinctively followed.

Rain had begun falling outside.

The marble terrace quickly became slippery.

The man sprinted toward the parking lot.

Detective Brooks chased only a few steps behind.

"Police!"

"Stop!"

Instead...

The man climbed into a black SUV.

The engine roared.

But before he could escape—

Daniel stepped directly in front of the vehicle.

The SUV screeched to a halt only inches away.

The driver slammed both fists against the steering wheel.

"There is nowhere left to run."

Detective Brooks surrounded the vehicle with officers.

The driver's door slowly opened.

The man raised both hands.

He looked exhausted.

Defeated.

"My name..."

he whispered,

"...is Victor Kane."

Detective Brooks recognized the name immediately.

Victor Kane.

Former financial advisor to the Whitmore family.

He had disappeared almost three years earlier after being accused of fraud.

"What are you doing here?" she demanded.

Victor looked toward Eleanor.

"I came to make sure she kept her promise."

Daniel frowned.

"What promise?"

Victor laughed bitterly.

"The promise that we would never speak of the baby again."

The world seemed to stop.

Back inside the ballroom...

Victor sat surrounded by detectives.

His soaked gray suit clung to his shoulders.

He stared at the floor.

"I never wanted this."

Detective Brooks opened her notebook.

"Start talking."

Victor nodded slowly.

"It began eleven years ago."

Everyone listened.

"Eleanor wasn't trying to have children."

Daniel looked confused.

"What?"

Victor continued.

"She already had one."

The ballroom gasped.

Daniel stared at his wife.

"You had a child?"

Tears streamed down Eleanor's face.

"I was nineteen."

"My parents forced me to keep it secret."

"They said a baby would destroy my future."

Daniel couldn't believe what he was hearing.

Victor spoke quietly.

"They paid a doctor to arrange an illegal adoption."

"But the child disappeared."

"What do you mean disappeared?"

"The paperwork was fake."

"The baby was sold."

A wave of horror swept across the room.

Eleanor buried her face in her hands.

"I searched for years."

"I never stopped."

Victor continued.

"Three weeks ago..."

"Someone contacted Eleanor."

"They claimed they had found her first child."

Daniel's eyes widened.

"The baby?"

Victor slowly shook his head.

"No."

"The little girl."

Everyone looked toward Lily.

She stood silently holding the infant.

Victor pointed at her.

"Lily..."

"...is Eleanor's daughter."

The ballroom erupted.

Several guests gasped aloud.

Daniel stared at Lily in complete disbelief.

Lily looked equally confused.

"What?"

Victor nodded sadly.

"You were never abandoned."

"You were stolen."

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"No..."

Eleanor fell to her knees.

"Lily..."

She reached toward her daughter.

"I've searched for you every birthday."

"Every Christmas."

"I never stopped looking."

Lily stepped backward.

"You left me."

"No!"

"I was lied to."

"My parents told me you had died."

The room dissolved into stunned silence.

Then Detective Brooks spoke.

"What does any of this have to do with the baby?"

Victor's face darkened.

"Everything."

He looked toward the sleeping infant.

"Because..."

"...that baby isn't Eleanor's victim."

Everyone froze.

Victor took a deep breath.

"He's Lily's son."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Daniel could barely breathe.

Detective Brooks stared in disbelief.

Lily herself looked as though the world had collapsed beneath her feet.

"What..."

she whispered.

"...what did you say?"

Victor lowered his head.

"The DNA report arrived yesterday."

"The baby you rescued..."

"...is your own child."

Lily's knees buckled.

She almost dropped to the floor before Daniel rushed forward to steady her.

She looked at the tiny sleeping face she had loved and protected for weeks.

The baby reached out in his sleep...

and wrapped his tiny fingers around hers.

A single tear rolled down Lily's cheek.

She whispered through trembling lips,

"I thought..."

"...I was saving a stranger."

Victor closed his eyes.

"You were saving your son."

And in that heartbreaking moment...

everyone in the ballroom realized that the greatest secret of all...

May you like

had only just been uncovered.
