Between Fear and Revenge: The Awakening Underground

Desperation is a powerful motivator. When you hear the clang of metal against stone above your head, the instinct for survival takes complete control of your body. It wasn't just fear of death; it was a deep indignation that kept me awake in that wooden box.

Ricardo and Rebeca thought they had given me a lethal dose, but my body resisted. Perhaps it was fate, or perhaps it was my father's will watching over me from beyond. The truth is, while they celebrated their supposed victory upstairs, I fought for every inch of freedom inside the coffin.

I started moving my wrists. The ropes were tight, but sweat and panic made my skin slippery. I could hear the sound of dirt falling onto the gravestone. Each shovelful of dirt meant one less second of oxygen.

—“Do you think they’ll suspect anything at the club?” Rebecca asked from outside. Her voice sounded more muffled now.

—"Please, Rebecca. I'm a respected businessman. I'll say that Elena had a nervous breakdown and decided to check herself into a clinic in Switzerland. Nobody goes into Switzerland to investigate," Ricardo replied smugly.

I kept fighting. My nails broke against the wood, my fingers bled, but finally I felt the knot in my hands loosen. With a violent jerk that nearly dislocated my shoulder, I freed my right hand. I immediately ripped the gag from my mouth.

"Help!" I tried to shout, but my voice was barely a whisper. Dust from the cemetery seeped through the cracks and made me cough.

She knew that if she screamed now, they would realize she was still alive and simply finish the job more violently. She had to wait. She had to wait until they left to attempt the impossible.

What seemed like hours passed. Silence finally enveloped the cemetery. Only the sound of the wind rustling through the cypress trees remained. It was then that I began to pound on the coffin lid with my feet and my now freed hands.

But the lid wouldn't budge. The stone on top was too heavy. I was trapped in a millionaire's prison, surrounded by the wealth my father had left me, which was now becoming my shroud.

Suddenly, I heard a different noise. It wasn't Ricardo's or Rebecca's voice. It was a rhythmic, metallic, constant sound. Someone was banging on the tomb from outside. Had they come back to finish me off? Terror paralyzed me.

—"Something's weird here... the boss told me to seal this up, but I hear noises inside," said a deep, male voice with a humble accent.

It was Don Jacinto, the old gravedigger who had known my family for years. He wasn't part of the plan. He was just following orders, but his curiosity and kind heart compelled him to stop.

—“Don Jacinto! It’s me, Elena! Please help me!” I shouted with all the strength I had left, hitting the wood with a stone I found inside the pit.

The man stopped dead in his tracks. I heard him drop the tool in fright. But then the sound of the axe striking the stone became more frantic. He was trying to split the slab.

—“Mrs. Elena! Hold on! I’m about to break the stone!” the man shouted as fragments of marble flew everywhere.

Upstairs, the scene was horrific. Don Jacinto, his orange t-shirt stained with cement, was working like a madman. In the background, Roberto, my husband's trusted driver who had been sent to supervise, stared at him, wide-eyed.

—“What are you doing, you crazy old man? Stop that! The boss said not to open it under any circumstances,” Roberto shouted, approaching in a threatening manner.

Don Jacinto didn't stop. One more blow. And another. The stone cracked. The sunlight, that blessed light I thought I'd never see again, filtered through a crack.

—“She’s alive, Roberto! I can hear her!” Don Jacinto exclaimed with tears in his eyes.

Roberto pulled out a gun. He was ready to kill the gravedigger to complete Ricardo's plan. The tension was unbearable. I could see the gun barrel through the crack as Don Jacinto raised the axe to deliver the final blow that would either free me or condemn us both.

—"Do it, Roberto. Shoot. But the whole cemetery will know that the millionaire ordered his wife killed," the old man challenged.
