Chapter 7 - THE CRACKS IN THE FACADE

The aftermath of my testimony was immediate and chaotic. Judge Thomas did not just deny Evan’s motion; he

dismissed his entire petition with prejudice. Furthermore, the judge took the extraordinary step of ordering a

temporary freeze on all of Evan's personal and business assets and referring the forensic evidence of domestic

abuse directly to the District Attorney's office for criminal investigation.

As Diana and I walked out of the courtroom, we were met by a wall of flashing cameras and shouting

reporters. The story was already spreading like wildfire.

*“Former Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Clara Vance Exposes Powerful Attorney Husband in Shocking

Courtroom Testimony.”*

By that evening, the video footage of the hearing—specifically the moment I opened my coat—had gone viral.

On social media, millions of people were sharing the image, calling me a hero and demanding Evan’s immediate

arrest.

I sat in Diana’s office, sipping a cup of hot tea. For the first time in seven years, I felt a weight lifting off my

chest.

"We won the first battle, Clara," Diana said, sitting across from me with a laptop open. "But Evan is like a wounded

animal right now. He’s cornered, and that makes him dangerous. He’s going to try to discredit your forensic report.

He’s already hired a private forensic consultant to try and argue that your scars could have been caused by

something else."

"Let him try," I said calmly. "No reputable medical professional would risk their license to lie about injuries that

clear. But what about Vivian and Marissa? They committed perjury under oath."

Diana smiled, a cold, predatory gleam in her eyes. "I’m already ahead of you. I’ve subpoenaed Marissa’s

phone records and Vivian’s financial statements. If they lied for Evan, there’s a paper trail. People like Vivian don't

do things out of pure love; there's always a transaction. And Marissa is young. She won't want to go to prison for a

man whose reputation is currently burning to the ground."

Just then, my phone buzzed. It was an email from Aris Thorne.

*Clara, the Board of Trustees at the Forensic Institute just saw the news. They want to know if you would be

open to returning as Chief Medical Examiner. The position is yours if you want it.*

I stared at the screen, tears pricking my eyes. For years, Evan had told me I was nothing without him. He had

convinced me that my career was dead, that I was too broken to ever step foot in a lab again. But the world hadn't

forgotten Dr. Clara Vance. They were waiting for me to come home.

"Are you okay?" Diana asked softly.

"I'm better than okay," I said, wiping a tear from my cheek. "I’m getting my life back."

Meanwhile, across town in the Sterling mansion, the atmosphere was far from celebratory. Evan stood in his

study, surrounded by half-empty bottles of whiskey. His mother, Vivian, was pacing the floor, her face pale and

drawn.

"You told me you had this under control, Evan!" she hissed, her voice trembling. "The Board of Directors called.

They are asking you to step down from the firm. The Sterling name is ruined!"

"Shut up, Mother!" Evan roared, throwing his glass against the fireplace, where it shattered into a thousand pieces.

"I built this empire! I am not going to let a pathetic, crazy housewife take it away from me. She thinks she won?

She has no idea what I’m capable of."

In the shadows of the hallway, Marissa Vance listened to the shouting. She looked down at her phone, where

she had just received a formal notice from the District Attorney's office regarding a perjury investigation. She

swallowed hard, realizing that the ship she had jumped onto was sinking fast—and she had to get off before it

dragged her under.
