Chapter 8 - EXPOSING THE ACCOMPLICES

The pressure on Evan’s camp was suffocating. Within forty-eight hours, the District Attorney officially opened a

criminal case against him for felony domestic assault. But we weren't done. Diana and I were preparing to

dismantle his entire support system.

We scheduled a deposition for Marissa Vance.

We sat in a sterile conference room. Marissa looked a shadow of her former, confident self. Her designer

clothes were replaced by a simple, conservative gray suit, and her eyes were red-bellied from crying. Croft sat

beside her, but he looked defeated.

Diana placed a stack of papers on the table. "Ms. Vance, I have here your phone records from the night of

March 8th. At 11:45 PM—approximately twenty minutes after my client was assaulted—you received a text

message from Evan Sterling. It reads: 'It's done. She's cooperative. Get the paperwork ready.' Would you care to

explain what 'cooperative' meant?"

Marissa looked at Croft, who stayed silent. She began to tremble.

"We also have a record of a wire transfer," Diana continued, sliding another document across the table. "The sum of

fifty thousand dollars was transferred from a trust account controlled by Vivian Sterling to your personal savings

account the day after you filed your sworn affidavit claiming Dr. Vance threatened you. In legal terms, Ms. Vance,

that is called bribery and perjury."

"I... I didn't want to do it," Marissa sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "Evan told me that if I didn't help him, he

would fire me and blackball me from every law firm in the state. He said Clara was crazy and that they were just

trying to get her the help she needed. I didn't know he was hurting her like that! I swear!"

"If you want to stay out of prison, Marissa," I said, speaking up for the first time, "you need to tell the truth. All of

it."

"I will!" Marissa cried. "I’ll tell them everything. He planned the whole thing. He wanted to divorce you and leave

you with nothing so he could marry me and keep the estate. He made his mother write that statement. It was all a

lie."

Croft closed his eyes and sighed. The deposition was over. Evan's defense had just imploded.

By that afternoon, Marissa had signed a full confession and agreed to cooperate with the prosecution in

exchange for immunity.

The next target was Vivian. With Marissa's testimony and the financial records, the state filed formal charges

against Vivian Sterling for bribery and conspiracy to commit perjury.

I stood across the street from the Sterling estate as the police cruisers arrived. I watched as Vivian, the proud,

aristocratic woman who had looked down on me for seven years, was led out of her mansion in handcuffs. She

didn't look like a queen anymore. She looked like an old, frail woman facing the cold reality of her actions.

As the police car drove away, I felt a profound sense of justice. They had tried to paint me as a victim of my

own mind. Instead, they had become victims of their own greed.

But there was still one final piece of the puzzle. Evan was still free on bail, hiding in his empty mansion. And

May you like

a man who has lost everything has nothing left to lose.
