She opened her white quilted handbag, pulling out a small notebook where she had meticulously documented dates, incidents of emotional withdrawal, and the specific details of the confrontation at the birthday party.
Marcus listened intently, nodding as he jotted down notes with a fountain pen. His expression remained professional and neutral, neither overly sympathetic nor dismissive, which Clara actually appreciated. When she finished recounting the events of the party—emphasizing Julian’s refusal to protect their daughter and his mother’s verbal assault—Marcus leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers. "What you experienced, Clara, is a textbook case of emotional alienation and domestic imbalance," Marcus explained in a measured, calm tone. "However, custody battles require concrete evidence of persistent negligence or danger, not just isolated personality flaws or bad parenting moments at parties. Clara felt a heavy burden lift from her shoulders, though new anxieties quickly rushed in to take its place. "Will he fight for full custody just out of spite?" she asked, her voice tight with apprehension. Marcus offered a realistic, reassuring smile. "Men like Julian rarely want the actual daily labor of raising a toddler; they want the image of a perfect family to project to the world. Once he realizes you are serious and legally protected, his primary concern will shift to asset division and public reputation." They spent the next hour outlining the immediate next steps: filing the paperwork, securing a temporary restraining order against unannounced harassment, and freezing joint accounts to prevent financial sabotage. Walking out of the law firm into the crisp afternoon air, Clara felt the first genuine breath of freedom she had experienced in years.
