Chapter 6: The Shadow of Eleanor

The confrontation at the grocery store left Clara shaken, but it also crystallized her resolve. That evening, after putting Lily to sleep in the guest room, Clara sat at Sarah’s kitchen island reviewing financial statements she had managed to download before leaving the house. The numbers confirmed her worst suspicions: Julian had slowly been siphoning joint savings into a separate corporate account tied to his consulting firm, a move designed to leave her financially vulnerable if she ever tried to leave. As she made copies for Marcus Vance, the kitchen landline suddenly rang, cutting through the quiet evening. Sarah picked it up on the second ring, her face instantly hardening as she listened to the caller before abruptly slamming the receiver back onto its cradle with a sharp clatter.

"Who was it?" Clara asked, her heart skipping a beat as she looked up from her paperwork. "Eleanor," Sarah spat out, crossing her arms in frustration. "She wanted to 'have a civilized conversation' about your 'unhinged behavior' and suggested I talk some sense into you before you ruin Julian’s career." Clara felt a cold wave of anger wash over her. Eleanor had always operated as the puppet master of Julian’s life, pulling the strings and validating his emotional detachment under the guise of maternal wisdom. For years, Clara had endured passive-aggressive remarks about her career choices, her housekeeping, and her parenting style, always biting her tongue to keep the peace. Now, realized that Eleanor's desperate phone call was a sign of panic. They were losing control of the narrative, and the looming threat of public exposure was terrifying to a family obsessed with social standing.

Sarah poured herself a glass of water, leaning against the counter. "Don't you dare call her back, Clara. That’s a trap designed to make you lose your temper so they can use it against you in court." Clara nodded, sliding the financial documents neatly into her white quilted handbag. "I know. Marcus warned me about their tactics. They want a messy emotional fight because they don't know how to handle cold, hard legal facts." The phone remained silent for the rest of the night, but the encounter served as a stark reminder that the battle lines were firmly drawn. Eleanor and Julian were not going to let go easily, and Clara needed to stay a step ahead, relying on her legal counsel and the unwavering support of her sister to protect her daughter's future.
