Chapter 11 - The Long WaitThe weeks that followed were a testament to the power of endurance.

I remained in my hospital bed, a silent sentinel protecting the two lives growing inside me. The penthouse on Park Avenue was sold to a prominent museum foundation, and the proceeds were funneled directly into a trust fund for my children.

Adrian’s legal team tried every trick in the book. They filed motions to dismiss the assault charges, claimed the protective order was a ploy to gain leverage in a divorce, and tried to challenge the debt-to-equity conversion of Aegis Capital.

But Julian and his team of legal sharks were always three steps ahead.

Every motion Adrian filed was met with a mountain of irrefutable evidence. We produced security footage from the penthouse kitchen showing him dragging me. We produced financial audits showing he had systematically embezzled funds from his own clients. We produced emails from Vanessa detailing how he had planned to force me to sign over my remaining inheritance.

By the eighth week of my bed rest, Adrian’s defense fund was completely depleted. His high-priced lawyers abandoned him, leaving him with a public defender who quickly advised him to plead guilty to the assault charges to avoid a maximum prison sentence.

Vanessa, true to her cowardly nature, turned state’s evidence. In exchange for immunity from prosecution, she provided federal investigators with every detail of Adrian’s financial schemes. She painted him as a manipulative masterminded who had forced her to assist him.

Adrian was left with nothing. No money, no friends, no mistress, and no future.

But my focus was not on his ruin. It was on my babies.

Every day, Evelyn would perform an ultrasound. And every day, the twins grew stronger.

“You’re doing beautifully, Mara,” Evelyn said during our week thirty-four checkup. “The cervix has stabilized. The hemorrhage is completely resolved. You’ve made it past the danger zone. If they were born today, they would be perfectly fine.”

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for months. I reached down, patting my large, round belly. “We made it,” I whispered. “We made it, my sweet ones.”
