Chapter 8 - The FreezeAdrian’s hand shook as he pulled out his backup phone—a cheap burner he kept in his glove compartment, which he had quickly activated in the car.

He logged into his personal wealth management app at Swiss Heritage Bank.

“No,” Adrian whispered, a cold sweat breaking out across his entire body. “No, no, no. This is impossible. Those are private offshore accounts! They are protected by international banking laws!”

“They were protected,” a new voice entered the conversation.

A tall, elegant man in a bespoke gray suit stepped out from the security elevator, holding a leather briefcase. It was Julian Vance—Mara’s uncle and the chief managing partner of Vance & Associates, the oldest and most powerful corporate law firm in the state.

Julian had been estranged from Mara for years, or so Adrian had believed. Adrian had thought Julian hated Mara because of a family dispute over her father’s estate.

But as Julian smiled at Adrian, it became clear that the "estrangement" had been a carefully orchestrated facade to keep Adrian from suspecting the family alliance.

“Good evening, Adrian,” Julian said, his voice smooth and dangerous. “You always were a mediocre chess player. You forgot that in the Vance family, we don't air our dirty laundry in public. We wait until the target is completely isolated.”

“Julian,” Adrian stammered. “You... you’re helping her? She stole your brother’s estate!”

“My brother’s estate was always meant for Mara,” Julian explained, tapping his briefcase. “The 'lawsuit' we filed against her three years ago was a dummy action. It allowed us to move her assets into Vanguard Trust under the guise of a legal settlement, completely hiding them from your discovery process during your marriage. You thought you were marrying a girl with a modest dowry. In reality, you married the majority shareholder of the bank that holds your mortgage, your corporate credit lines, and your offshore debt.”

Adrian took a step back, the sheer scale of the trap he had walked into finally hitting him.

Every move he had made for the last three years—every vacation he had planned, every business expansion he had funded, every secret account he had opened in the Caymans—had been monitored, facilitated, and ultimately owned by the wife he had treated like a dog.

“You... you set me up,” Adrian whispered.

“No, Adrian. You set yourself up,” Julian corrected him. “We simply provided the rope. And tonight, you decided to hang yourself when you laid your hands on my niece.”

Julian opened his briefcase and pulled out a stack of legal documents, handing them to a terrified Vanessa.

“What is this?” Vanessa gasped.

“That, Ms. DuPont, is a subpoena,” Julian said politely. “Your family’s investment firm, DuPont Holdings, has been co-mingling funds with Aegis Capital. We have evidence that you personally accepted over five million dollars in stolen corporate assets from Adrian’s fund as 'consulting fees.' If you do not cooperate with the federal investigators tomorrow morning, you will be named as a co-conspirator in a massive wire fraud and grand larceny case.”

Vanessa’s face turned white. She dropped the papers, looking at Adrian as if he were a leper.

“I... I didn't know!” she cried. “He told me it was clean! He told me his wife was crazy!”

“Vanessa, shut up!” Adrian roared.

But Vanessa was already backing away toward the sliding glass doors. “I have nothing to do with this! I’m calling my father. Adrian, don't ever call me again!”

She turned and ran out of the lobby, her heels clicking frantically in the night air, leaving Adrian standing utterly alone.
