Chapter 3 - THE DINNER OF SECRETS

The perfect opportunity arrived Saturday night. Richard had organized an intimate dinner to celebrate the success of the merger. At the large dining room table, beneath the Baccarat crystal chandelier, sat Richard at the head, Victoria to his right, Emma to his left, and Julian Vance, the guest of honor, opposite Emma.
The clinking of silver cutlery against china sounded like a countdown.
“I’ll drink to Julian,” Richard said, raising his glass of red wine, his eyes shining with gratitude. “Without your boldness in the negotiations, the Chicago partners would have devoured us. You’re more than my vice president, my boy. You’re like a son to me.”
Julian smiled, though a bead of cold sweat trickled down his temple. Victoria downed her wine in one gulp. “Thank you, Richard. I do it for the family,” Julian replied, avoiding Emma’s gaze.
Emma rose slowly. She picked up her crystal glass. “I’d also like to propose a toast,” he said, his voice resonating with a deathly calm. “To loyalty. To trust. And to the sacrifices made behind closed doors.”
Richard smiled at his daughter, but Victoria paled instantly. “Emma, sit down,” her mother hissed.
Ignoring her, Emma pulled out her cell phone and connected it to the home’s smart system with a tap. The enormous flat-screen TV in the adjacent living room sprang to life. There was no sound, only high-definition images. The entire dining room fell silent as the video of Julian stumbling into the master suite behind Victoria played on the screen. The time in the upper corner read 2:00 PM Tuesday. Richard was in Chicago.
The sound of a glass shattering on the floor broke the spell. It was Richard’s glass. The Carter patriarch stood up, his face turning from bewilderment to a deep purple with pure rage. He looked at the screen, then at his wife, and finally at the man he called son.

"Richard, I can explain..." Victoria stammered, getting up awkwardly, tears ruining her perfect makeup.
"Out!" Richard's roar made the windows rattle.
