Chapter 5 - THE LEGACY OF DECEPTION

Six months later.

Emma lived in a small Brooklyn apartment, working as a paralegal and using a false last name to avoid reporters. She had cut off all contact with her parents. She thought she had left behind the toxicity of the Carter bloodline, settling for a simple life, far from the lies and betrayals.

One November afternoon, as snow began to fall on the city, Emma found a thick cardboard package outside her apartment door. It had no return address.

She went into her small living room, poured herself a glass of water, and cut the packing tape with scissors. Inside was a portable safe, already unlocked, and a handwritten letter. Emma recognized the handwriting immediately. It was from Julian.

Emma: Your mother abandoned me as soon as the money ran out. Your father is awaiting sentencing. You won. You destroyed the deception. But I think you're smart enough to know that in our family, no truth is absolute. I found this in a Swiss safe deposit box that Victoria gave me access to before the disaster. I thought about destroying it, but considering you were the one who started the fire, I think you deserve to see the real ashes.

With trembling hands, Emma opened the small safe. Inside was an original birth certificate, dated twenty years ago.

Emma Carter. Mother: Victoria Carter. But on the line where Richard Carter's name should have been, there was another name printed. A name Emma knew all too well.

Suddenly, Emma's cell phone buzzed on the table. A private number. "Did you read the documents, Emma?" The voice on the other end was deep, gentle, and belonged to the man who had destroyed her family, but who now, according to the paper in her hands, shared her blood.

Emma dropped the document to the floor, feeling the true abyss just opening beneath her feet. "Julian?" she whispered, her voice breaking with terror.

"We have a lot to talk about, my daughter," he replied. And believe me, what Victoria did to Richard is nothing compared to what Richard did to you.

The call didn't end, but Emma stopped listening. She stared out the window into the darkness of the city, realizing with a paralyzing terror that the Carter family's story hadn't ended with her mother's infidelity. It was only just beginning.
