THE POISONED MILK / Chapter 1 / 3

Part One: The Bottle That Saved a Life

THE POISONED MILK

Part One: The Bottle That Saved a Life

The nursery had always been the quietest room in the mansion.

Painted in soft shades of ivory and pale blue, it was designed to be a sanctuary where nothing ugly could ever exist. Delicate clouds decorated the ceiling, while tiny stars glowed faintly in the dim evening light. A white wooden crib stood near the window, draped with sheer curtains that swayed gently whenever the breeze slipped through the slightly open balcony door.

Inside the crib slept six-month-old Oliver.

His tiny chest rose and fell in peaceful rhythm, completely unaware that his life had almost ended before it had truly begun.

The grandfather clock in the hallway chimed seven times.

Dinner downstairs had just begun.

Guests filled the mansion, celebrating the announcement of Richard Ashford's newest business acquisition. Laughter echoed from the grand dining hall while waiters carried silver trays filled with champagne and gourmet dishes.

Upstairs, however...

Everything changed in less than two seconds.

CRASH!

The sound of shattered glass exploded through the nursery.

Emily, the young housemaid, had thrown the baby's bottle against the marble floor with all her strength.

Milk splashed across the room.

The expensive crystal bottle shattered into dozens of glittering pieces only inches away from Oliver's crib.

The baby startled awake and began crying.

Emily's breathing became ragged.

"No..."

she whispered.

"No..."

She stared at the puddle spreading across the polished floor.

Her hands were shaking violently.

Before she could explain herself—

SLAP!

A sharp blow sent her sprawling across the nursery.

Emily collapsed onto the floor, her cheek burning with pain.

Standing above her was Victoria Ashford.

Oliver's mother.

She wore a floor-length burgundy satin gown that shimmered beneath the chandelier. Her normally graceful face had transformed into one of uncontrollable fury.

Her chest rose and fell rapidly.

"What have you DONE?"

Her voice echoed through the room.

Emily tried to speak.

"I..."

Another shout interrupted her.

"Have you lost your mind?"

Victoria rushed toward the crib, lifting Oliver into her arms.

The baby continued crying as she held him tightly against her chest.

"You threw a glass bottle next to my child!"

Emily pressed one trembling hand against her swollen cheek.

Tears streamed uncontrollably down her face.

"It wasn't—"

"Don't you dare speak!"

Victoria's voice cracked.

"If even one piece of glass had reached him..."

She couldn't finish the sentence.

Her entire body trembled.

Emily looked desperately toward the spilled milk.

"Please..."

she whispered.

"Look..."

Victoria ignored her.

"I trusted you."

Emily had worked for the Ashford family for nearly four years.

She had never once raised her voice.

Never broken a dish.

Never arrived late.

She was the first person awake every morning and usually the last one to sleep.

Everyone described her as quiet.

Kind.

Invisible.

Which made today's behavior completely unimaginable.

Victoria pulled out her phone.

"I'm calling security."

Emily suddenly crawled forward.

"No!"

Victoria stepped backward immediately.

"Stay away from us!"

Emily stopped moving.

She knew exactly how she looked.

A terrified maid on her knees.

Hair disheveled.

Face swollen.

Crying uncontrollably.

Nobody would believe her.

Nobody.

Then...

Something happened.

A faint hissing sound filled the nursery.

Emily looked down first.

Her eyes widened.

"It's starting..."

Victoria frowned.

"What?"

Emily slowly pointed toward the spilled milk.

Neither woman spoke.

At first...

Nothing appeared unusual.

The white liquid rested quietly among the broken pieces of glass.

Then tiny bubbles appeared.

One.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

Within seconds the surface began boiling despite the room being cool.

Victoria frowned.

"What is..."

The bubbling became violent.

A strange gray smoke rose from the milk.

An acrid smell spread through the nursery.

The polished marble floor suddenly darkened.

Then...

It began dissolving.

Victoria stared in disbelief.

The expensive imported stone hissed as if someone had poured industrial acid onto it.

Tiny cracks spread beneath the puddle.

The surface blackened.

Smoke curled upward.

Oliver stopped crying.

Even the baby seemed strangely quiet.

Victoria slowly looked back toward Emily.

The maid was sobbing uncontrollably.

"I didn't throw it because I was angry."

She struggled to breathe.

"I threw it because..."

"...he was about to drink it."

Victoria felt every muscle in her body freeze.

"What..."

Emily swallowed.

"There was something inside."

"No..."

Victoria whispered.

"No..."

She stared again at the bubbling liquid eating through solid marble.

The floor beneath it continued to crumble.

"This isn't possible."

Emily wiped tears from her eyes.

"I smelled something strange while warming the bottle."

"I thought the milk had spoiled."

"But when I tested one drop..."

She pointed toward a nearby silver spoon lying on the changing table.

Half the spoon had completely corroded.

"It melted."

Victoria could barely breathe.

Her arms instinctively tightened around Oliver.

Her heart pounded so violently she could hear it.

Someone...

Had poisoned her baby.

Before another word could be spoken—

The nursery door slowly opened.

Both women turned.

Standing in the doorway was Charlotte.

Victoria's younger sister.

Twenty-eight years old.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Perfectly dressed in an emerald-green silk jacket over a cream blouse.

Her long blonde hair was neatly pinned behind one ear.

In her hand she still held a small white towel.

She smiled automatically as she entered.

"I heard Oliver cry. Is everyth—"

She stopped.

Her eyes fell upon the shattered bottle.

The bubbling milk.

The smoking marble floor.

Emily crying.

Victoria holding the baby.

The color disappeared from Charlotte's face.

Her breathing stopped.

The towel slipped from her fingers.

"No..."

she whispered.

Victoria noticed something immediately.

Charlotte wasn't confused.

She wasn't surprised.

She looked...

Terrified.

As though she already knew exactly what had happened.

Emily slowly raised her trembling hand.

"That's her..."

Victoria looked between the two women.

"What?"

Emily couldn't stop crying.

"She prepared the bottle."

The room became silent again.

Victoria slowly turned toward her younger sister.

"Charlotte..."

Her voice barely existed.

"You said you wanted to help tonight."

Charlotte said nothing.

"You insisted on feeding Oliver before dinner."

Still nothing.

"You took the bottle into the kitchen."

Silence.

"You told me to go downstairs because the guests were waiting."

Charlotte's lips trembled.

Victoria took one slow step forward.

"...Did you prepare his milk?"

Charlotte finally looked up.

Tears instantly filled her eyes.

"I..."

She couldn't continue.

Victoria felt her entire world begin collapsing.

"Charlotte."

Her voice became firmer.

"Answer me."

Charlotte looked at the bubbling puddle again.

Then at Oliver.

Then back at Victoria.

For a moment...

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Finally...

Charlotte whispered three words.

"It wasn't me."

Emily immediately shook her head.

"She's lying."

Victoria looked between them.

One woman had just saved her son's life.

The other...

was her own sister.

Someone was telling the truth.

Someone was hiding a terrible secret.

And somewhere inside the mansion...

May you like

The real nightmare had only just begun.
