Part Three: The Man Behind the Poison

A heavy silence settled over the nursery.
Victoria felt as though the walls were closing in around her.
Outside, the mansion was alive with laughter. Crystal glasses clinked together as guests toasted Richard's newest business triumph. A string quartet played softly in the ballroom, completely unaware that only a few rooms away, someone had attempted to murder the family's only child.
Inside the nursery, however, every illusion of safety had vanished.
Victoria looked at her sleeping son, then back at Richard.
"You've known about this all these years?"
Richard closed his eyes.
"I found out after my father died."
"And you never told me?"
"I wanted to protect you."
"Protect me?"
Victoria's voice broke.
"Our son almost died tonight because of a secret you decided to keep."
Richard lowered his head.
"I never imagined anyone would come after Oliver."
Emily remained standing near the doorway, quietly observing everyone in the room.
Something still didn't feel right.
If the poison had been placed in the bottle while Charlotte was gone...
Then the person responsible had known exactly when she would leave.
That wasn't luck.
It was planning.
Very careful planning.
Emily spoke for the first time.
"Mr. Ashford..."
Richard looked at her.
"Who knew your father had another son?"
Richard thought for a moment.
"Very few people."
"My father."
"His lawyer."
"My family's longtime butler."
"And me."
Emily frowned.
"Only four?"
Richard nodded.
"The records were sealed."
Victoria suddenly interrupted.
"The lawyer."
Richard turned.
"What about him?"
"He handled the inheritance."
Richard's face tightened.
"Edward Holloway."
"When did you last speak with him?"
Richard thought carefully.
"This morning."
The room became silent again.
"This morning?" Victoria repeated.
Richard nodded slowly.
"He stopped by before lunch."
"What for?"
"He wanted me to sign several trust documents for Oliver."
Emily exchanged a quick glance with Charlotte.
Something about that sounded wrong.
Richard noticed their expressions.
"What?"
Emily answered carefully.
"If Mr. Holloway prepared documents for Oliver..."
"...he knew exactly who would inherit your estate."
Richard's eyes widened.
"So if Oliver died..."
Victoria finished the sentence.
"...someone else would receive everything."
At that exact moment—
Richard's phone rang.
The screen displayed one name.
Edward Holloway.
Everyone stared.
Richard answered immediately.
"Edward."
Only static answered.
Then...
A weak voice.
"Richard..."
It sounded terrified.
"You have to listen."
"What happened?"
"They know."
Richard frowned.
"Who?"
"I found the original inheritance file."
"You were right."
"There really was another heir."
Richard glanced toward Victoria.
"What are you talking about?"
Edward's breathing became frantic.
"I made a mistake twenty-five years ago."
"What mistake?"
"I helped your father hide someone."
Richard's heartbeat quickened.
"Who?"
Before Edward could answer—
A loud crash echoed through the phone.
Then a scream.
The line went dead.
Richard called back immediately.
No answer.
Victoria felt sick.
"We're leaving."
Richard nodded.
"We're going to Edward's office."
"No."
Emily suddenly interrupted.
Everyone turned toward her.
"He didn't call from his office."
Richard frowned.
"How do you know?"
"I recognized the echo."
"What?"
"My father repaired old churches."
"I grew up hearing that sound."
"That wasn't an office."
"It was a large stone building."
Richard stared at her.
"A church?"
Emily slowly nodded.
"And there was one more sound."
She closed her eyes, concentrating.
"A bell."
Richard suddenly understood.
"St. Gabriel's Chapel."
Victoria looked confused.
"Why there?"
Richard answered quietly.
"My father donated the land."
"It has a private crypt beneath it."
Charlotte gasped.
"The family vault."
Richard's face darkened.
"If Edward went there..."
"...he found something."
Within minutes, Richard, Victoria, Emily, Charlotte, and two security guards climbed into black SUVs and sped through the rain toward the abandoned chapel on the outskirts of the city.
Lightning flashed across the sky.
Thunder shook the hills.
The old stone church stood alone among towering oak trees, its stained-glass windows dark after years of abandonment.
The front doors were slightly open.
Richard pushed them wider.
The old hinges groaned.
Inside...
Everything was silent.
Too silent.
The smell of damp stone filled the air.
Their footsteps echoed through the empty sanctuary.
"Edward?"
Richard called.
No answer.
Only silence.
Then...
Emily noticed something.
"There."
Fresh muddy footprints.
Leading toward the altar.
Richard followed them.
Behind the altar stood a massive wooden cross.
At its base...
A hidden door.
The old family crypt.
Richard pulled the iron handle.
The heavy door creaked open.
Cold air rushed upward.
The group descended the narrow stone staircase.
One step.
Two.
Twenty.
At the bottom...
They found Edward Holloway.
He was alive.
Barely.
The elderly lawyer leaned against the wall, clutching his bleeding shoulder.
"Edward!"
Richard rushed forward.
Edward looked up weakly.
"You came..."
"What happened?"
Edward pointed deeper into the crypt.
"He's here."
"Who?"
Edward swallowed painfully.
"Your brother."
Richard froze.
"My brother?"
Edward nodded.
"His real name isn't Michael."
"It's..."
A voice interrupted him from the darkness.
"No."
"You've already said too much."
Everyone turned.
A tall man stepped slowly into the dim light.
He looked to be in his late forties.
His expensive black coat was soaked with rain.
Gray streaks ran through his dark hair.
Most disturbing of all...
He looked almost exactly like Richard.
The resemblance was unmistakable.
Same eyes.
Same jawline.
Same posture.
Victoria whispered,
"My God..."
The stranger smiled.
"Hello, little brother."
Richard stood motionless.
"You..."
The man nodded.
"My name is Daniel Ashford."
"The son your father erased."
Victoria held Oliver tighter.
Daniel looked at the baby.
"I have waited forty years."
"My father abandoned my mother."
"He pretended we never existed."
"He gave you everything."
"And left us with nothing."
Richard's voice remained steady.
"So you poisoned my son?"
Daniel smiled sadly.
"I never wanted to."
"But I couldn't let another generation inherit what should have been mine."
Victoria stepped forward.
"You tried to murder an innocent child."
Daniel looked at her.
"I know."
"And I'll regret that until my last breath."
"But revenge blinds people."
Emily suddenly spoke.
"You threatened Charlotte's daughter."
Daniel lowered his head.
"Yes."
"I never intended to hurt the little girl."
"I only needed someone inside the house."
Charlotte burst into tears.
"You destroyed our family."
Daniel looked at her quietly.
"My family was destroyed before yours ever existed."
Richard slowly approached him.
"You should have come to me."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"As what?"
"The forgotten son?"
"The bastard your father hid in secret?"
"You think your board of directors would have welcomed me?"
Richard couldn't answer.
Because Daniel was right.
Their father had created this tragedy decades earlier.
Daniel reached into his coat.
Everyone froze.
Security guards raised their weapons.
Instead of a gun...
Daniel removed a worn leather envelope.
He handed it to Richard.
"What is this?"
"Our father's letters."
Richard opened the envelope.
Inside were dozens of handwritten pages.
The first line read:
'To my sons...'
Richard looked up.
Daniel was smiling through tears.
"He loved us both."
"He just wasn't brave enough to admit it."
Police sirens echoed outside.
Daniel heard them.
"So..."
He whispered.
"This is the end."
Richard slowly folded the letters.
"It doesn't have to be."
Daniel looked surprised.
"You confessed."
"You threatened my family."
"You'll answer for your crimes."
Richard took one step closer.
"But I won't let my father's sins destroy another generation."
Daniel stared at him.
For the first time in decades...
His anger disappeared.
Only exhaustion remained.
He slowly knelt.
Hands behind his head.
When police officers entered the crypt seconds later...
Daniel surrendered without resistance.
Six Months Later
The trial became national news.
Daniel pleaded guilty to attempted murder, conspiracy, and blackmail.
Because he had surrendered voluntarily and helped authorities uncover several financial crimes committed by others involved in the inheritance scheme, the court reduced his sentence.
Charlotte was cleared of all criminal charges after investigators confirmed she had acted under threats against her daughter.
Edward recovered from his injuries and publicly revealed the truth about the Ashford family inheritance.
Richard established a charitable foundation in honor of his late father—not to celebrate his wealth, but to support abandoned children and single parents, hoping no child would ever again grow up believing they had been forgotten.
Emily received the nation's highest civilian award for bravery.
She was also offered a position as Director of Family Welfare for the Ashford Foundation.
When reporters asked why she had accepted, she smiled gently.
"I didn't save a billionaire's son."
She looked at little Oliver, now laughing happily in his mother's arms.
"I saved a child."
"And every child deserves someone willing to protect them."
Victoria embraced her tightly.
"You'll always be part of this family."
Emily smiled through tears.
For the first time in many years...
She believed it.
