Chapter 11 - The Rebuilding

I read the letter three times before folding it carefully and placing it against my chest. My grandfather hadn't abandoned me to the wolves; he had trained me to be the apex predator.

“He knew,” I whispered to Liam, wiping a tear from my eye. “He orchestrated the whole thing.”

Liam smiled softly. “Arthur was a chess master until the very end. But he was right, Elena. Nobody else could have pulled this off. You walked into a trap, got a glass of wine thrown in your face, and ended up dismantling a corporate coup in under twenty-four hours.”

I let out a shaky laugh. “The wine was definitely the catalyst.”

Over the next month, the Sterling Alpine Lodge underwent a massive transformation. With Thomas and his cronies rotting in federal holding cells awaiting trial, I purged the entire corporate structure. Every manager who had been complicit in the embezzlement was fired and blacklisted.

I promoted Marcus Tate to Regional Director. The man had risked his job to help me when I was locked out of my own suite. Loyalty in the Sterling empire was no longer demanded; it was rewarded.

I also instituted a massive profit-sharing program for the ground-level staff. The maids, the bellhops, the ski instructors—the people who actually made the resort a world-class destination—were finally given the respect and compensation they deserved. The morale in the lodge skyrocketed, and our booking waitlist stretched out for two years.

But there was one final piece of business I needed to attend to.

It was mid-January, and the Aspen social season was at its absolute peak. We were hosting the Annual Winter Gala, the most exclusive charity event in the state. And this time, I wasn't sneaking in through the service entrance.
