Chapter 8 - The Burn Book

The silence in the ballroom was absolute. The Vanguard executives froze. The board members shifted uncomfortably in their seats, their eyes glued to the red folder in my hand.

“Security!” Thomas shouted, his voice cracking with sheer panic. “Guards, remove her immediately! She is having a mental breakdown!”

The two mercenaries from the night before stepped out from the shadows near the catering doors, reaching inside their jackets. But before they could take three steps toward me, a voice boomed from the back of the room.

“Federal Marshals! Stand down and keep your hands where I can see them!”

The side doors of the ballroom burst open. Liam Cross strode into the room, looking devastatingly handsome in a sharp black overcoat, flanked by six armed US Marshals. The mercenaries immediately raised their hands, stepping back.

Liam walked straight to my side, offering me a confident smirk. “Nice suit, Sterling. Shall we begin the proceedings?”

“Let’s,” I agreed. I walked toward the stage, my heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. Thomas backed away from the podium, sweating profusely.

I slammed the red folder onto the podium, opening it for the entire front row to see.

“My uncle Thomas has spent the last two years embezzling funds from the Sterling trust,” I announced to the room. “He took out fraudulent equity loans, forged my signature, and artificially deflated the value of this resort to trigger a hostile sale. Furthermore, he bribed three members of our executive board—Mr. Vance, Mr. Harrison, and Mrs. Gable—to rubber-stamp the acquisition.”

The three board members I named visibly shrank in their seats as the crowd gasped.

“This is a lie!” Thomas roared, pointing a trembling finger at me. “She forged those documents! She’s trying to steal my legacy!”

“It’s not your legacy, Thomas,” I said coldly. “It’s mine. And I didn't forge the wire transfers to your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. The SEC has been reviewing the data for the last hour. They find the evidence... compelling.”

Mr. Croft, the Vanguard executive, looked at Thomas with absolute disgust. “You told us the title was clean, Sterling. You told us the CEO had abdicated.”

“She did!” Thomas screamed.

“I’m standing right here,” I replied. I looked at the Marshals. “Arrest him.”
