Chapter 8 - The Custody War

"He’s filing for joint legal custody and temporary physical custody of Chloe," Rachel said, dropping a legal packet onto my lap as I sat in the nursery of our newly reclaimed penthouse.

Chloe was sleeping peacefully in her bassinet, completely unaware of the storm raging around her name.

I looked down at the court summons. Michael’s lawyers were attempting to argue that my immediate return to the corporate boardroom showed that I was an unstable, career-focused mother who was using the infant as a pawn in a corporate dispute.

"He thinks he can use her to leverage his shares back," I said, my voice dead and empty of any fear.

"He can try," Marcus Vance said, walking into the nursery with a quiet step. "But we have a preliminary hearing tomorrow morning with Judge Evelyn Taylor. She is notoriously intolerant of parental neglect."

The next morning, the Cook County Family Courtroom was quiet. Michael sat at the petitioner’s table, looking clean and polished once again, flanked by a high-priced family attorney he had undoubtedly borrowed money to afford.

I sat at the defense table, with Marcus at my side and Dr. Daniel Brooks sitting directly behind me in the gallery as a character witness.

"Your Honor," Michael’s attorney began, standing tall. "My client is a dedicated father who was tragically blocked from his daughter's birth due to an unprecedented municipal storm and an administrative miscommunication by his staff. His wife is now using her corporate leverage to isolate him from his newborn child."

Judge Taylor looked over her glasses, her face expressionless. "Ms. Vance, do you have a response?"

Marcus stood up calmly. "Your Honor, we would like to submit Exhibit A—the certified audio recording of the phone call routed through the hospital network at 3:07 a.m. on the night of the child's birth. We also have the verified text messages from the petitioner's phone, sent nine minutes prior to that call."

The prosecutor hit play on the digital media player.

Amber’s voice filled the courtroom, clear and cruel: “Michael is with me right now. And honestly? Your dramatic labor situation isn't his responsibility tonight.”

Then came the text message read aloud by Marcus: “Turn off the phone, Amber. She’s just being dramatic to ruin my weekend.”

The judge’s face didn't just harden; it went completely stone-cold. She looked down at Michael, who had slumped so low in his chair his chin was nearly touching his silk tie.

"The petitioner's request for temporary custody is denied," Judge Taylor announced, her gavel coming down with a sound like a gunshot. "Furthermore, the court orders supervised visitation only, capped at two hours per week at a court-approved facility, pending a full psychological evaluation. This court will not allow an innocent child to be used as a corporate shield."
