Chapter 9 - The Disintegrating Empire

Six weeks later, the final blow to Harrison Holdings landed. The forensic audit ordered by Claire had uncovered not just embezzlement, but an active kickback scheme involving the city's primary concrete suppliers. Michael had been inflating the construction costs of the new public library project, pocketing the excess cash through Amber’s shell company.
The federal investigators had seen enough.
At 10:00 a.m. on a brisk Tuesday, two FBI agents in dark suits walked into the lobby of Harrison Holdings. They didn't go to the boardroom; they went straight to the corner office where Michael was trying to clear his personal computer.
"Michael Harrison?" the lead agent asked, producing a federal warrant. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy to defraud a municipal entity."
Michael didn't fight. He didn't even look angry. He looked entirely hollowed out, his arms dropping to his sides as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
As they led him through the glass corridors of the executive floor, the entire staff stood in perfect silence, watching the man who had spent a decade treating them like expendable cogs get marched toward the service elevator in chains.

I stood by the glass windows of the main lobby, holding a folder of new contract drafts. Michael stopped for a brief second as he passed me, his eyes wide with a desperate, silent plea for mercy.
I didn't say a word. I simply looked at him, the same way he had looked at his phone at 3:07 a.m. when he decided that my life wasn't his responsibility. The elevator doors slid shut, and the name Harrison Holdings was officially erased from the building’s registry.
