Chapter 10 - The Courtroom Verdict

The final divorce and criminal sentencing hearing took place in a crowded federal courtroom three months later. The room was packed with journalists, former business partners, and city officials who wanted to witness the official fall of Michael Harrison.
Michael sat at the defense table in a bright orange jumpsuit, his hair cropped short, his face thin and pale from his time in the county holding facility. Amber sat two rows behind him in the gallery, wearing a simple black dress, having already pleaded guilty to a lesser misdemeanor charge in exchange for her testimony.
I stood at the podium in the center of the room, my voice echoing clearly off the high mahogany walls.
"Eleven years ago, I thought I was building a life with a partner," I said, looking directly at the man who had abandoned me. "I thought our success was a shared journey. But true strength isn't measured by the size of a corporate balance sheet or the address of a penthouse. It’s measured by what you do when the storm hits. Michael left me in the dark when I was at my weakest, but in doing so, he allowed me to discover how strong I truly am."
The judge nodded slowly, reviewing the thick stack of financial restitution documents.

"Michael Harrison, for the charges of federal wire fraud and grand corporate theft, you are sentenced to eight years at the federal penitentiary in Lewisburg, with no possibility of early release," the judge declared, bringing her heavy wooden gavel down for the final time. "Furthermore, all personal shares in the development firm are dissolved to satisfy the corporate restitution order, leaving Catherine Vance as the sole proprietor of the restructured entity."
Michael was led away through the heavy iron doors at the back of the room, his chains clinking against the hardwood floor. He didn't look back. He couldn't.
