Chapter 1 - THE BUTTON

The Easter table looked like something from a magazine.
White roses stood in crystal vases. Gold-rimmed plates reflected the afternoon sun. Hand-painted eggs rested inside silver bowls, and every place setting carried a folded linen rabbit.
At the far end of the room, four-year-old Lily Hale sat quietly beside her mother.
Sarah Hale wore a green dress and kept one hand beneath the table, resting against her daughter’s knee.
She had learned to recognize the warning signs.
Lenora’s smile becoming too still.
Cassandra’s laughter becoming too loud.
The servants disappearing from the room.
The doors closing.
Lily reached toward a small chocolate egg.
Lenora’s hand shot across the table.
“She doesn’t belong here!”
The elderly woman seized Lily by the upper arm and yanked her away from the chair.
The little girl lost her balance.
She crashed onto the hardwood floor and began crying.
Sarah stood so quickly her chair tipped backward.
“Don’t touch her!”
Cassandra stepped between them and shoved Sarah hard in the chest.
Sarah stumbled into the edge of the table.
Wine glasses rattled.
“Get out!”
Cassandra grabbed Sarah’s arm again.
Something inside Sarah changed.
She twisted free and slapped Cassandra once across the face.
The room froze.
Cassandra stared at her in disbelief.
Sarah did not apologize.
She knelt beside Lily, lifted her carefully, and held her against her shoulder.
“We’re leaving.”
Lily’s stuffed bunny lay beside the overturned chair.
Sarah picked it up.
Her thumb found the small seam beneath its left paw.
She pressed the hidden button inside.
No sound followed.
No light.
But three miles away, an encrypted signal entered the Hale estate’s emergency network.
Lenora laughed.
“You’ll come crawling back.”
Sarah slipped one hand into her purse and felt the sealed envelope inside.
She did not remove it.
Outside the tall dining-room windows, black security SUVs passed through the estate gates.
One relative noticed first.
Then another.
The front doors opened.
Six suited security officers entered the foyer.
Cassandra’s confidence disappeared.
The lead officer stopped at the dining-room threshold.
“Mrs. Hale?”
Sarah held Lily protectively.
“Yes.”
Lenora’s face changed.
The officer looked at the room.
“We received a protected-person alert.”
Cassandra stepped forward.
“This is a family matter.”
May you like
The officer did not look at her.
“Not anymore.”
