Chapter 25 - THE PERSON INSIDE THE NETWORK
Without Marcus, security felt hollow.
His deputy, Elena Park, suspended every credential he touched, rebuilt the camera keys, and moved Sarah, Lily, Emma, and Noah to separate locations.
The investigation moved quickly. The money was counterfeit. The cloned calls came from a relay installed inside the federal task-force office.
Only four people had entered the relay room.
One was a technician.
One was a janitor.
One was Captain Morgan.
The fourth was Rachel Moore.
Sarah refused the conclusion until she saw the video.
Rachel entered carrying a legal archive box and remained nine minutes. She said she delivered subpoena records at an agent’s request.
No request existed.
Rachel came to the clinic voluntarily.
“I did not frame Marcus.”
“Why were you there?”
Rachel placed an old photograph on the table. It showed her at twenty-three beside Victor Dane.
“He was my first employer.”
Rachel had never hidden that she began at a corporate firm. She had never named Victor.
“He recruited me from law school. I believed he was exposing Hale corruption. I copied records and introduced him to clerks. By the time I understood, he owned evidence of crimes I helped facilitate.”
“How long has he controlled you?”
“He stopped after Andrew’s trial. Until last month.”
Rachel admitted installing the relay under threat that Victor would release a recording making it appear she bribed Judge Cole. She claimed she did not know Marcus would be framed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I built my life around being the lawyer who believed survivors. If that recording came out—”
“You thought your reputation mattered more than our safety.”
Rachel began to cry.
Sarah did not comfort her.
Good intentions did not erase concealment. Years of loyal service did not make the betrayal unreal.
Rachel surrendered her license temporarily and cooperated. She showed investigators Victor’s secure chat.
A message arrived:
DELIVER THE BENEFICIARY KEY AT THE SPRING PERFORMANCE.
Rachel typed under supervision:
SARAH WILL NEVER AGREE.
Victor replied:
SARAH IS NOT THE DECISION MAKER.
Then Lily’s hidden phone rang.
Victor said, “Your mother keeps choosing institutions over people. Give me the key, and I release every child from this fight.”
Lily replied, “You choose children because adults know what you are.”
Silence.
“I will be at the performance,” Lily said.
Victor laughed. “Then we finally agree.”
Afterward, Sarah demanded to know why.
“Because he already expects me. The only choice left is whether we control the room.”
Marcus, cleared and released hours later, entered behind her.
For the first time since Andrew’s death, Sarah understood the plan could not be built around protecting Lily from every decision.
It had to be built with her.
