Chapter 18 - THE OLD COURTHOUSE

The old county courthouse had been abandoned after a flood damaged its lower floors. Victor chose it because sealed tunnels connected it to the civic district.

At 11:58 a.m., Sarah entered carrying Andrew’s letter inside a clear evidence sleeve.

Marcus watched from a nearby roof. Federal agents covered the tunnels. Rachel prepared a delayed public release of the Second Meridian index if Sarah missed a five-minute check-in.

Victor stood in the ruined courtroom beside Judge Cole. Dr. Vale guarded Lily near the jury box. Peter Lang held a pistol with trembling hands. Grant was nowhere visible.

“Give me the letter,” Victor said.

“Release Lily.”

“You know this is not an exchange.”

Lily’s lip was split. Her hands were bound, but her eyes remained clear.

Victor explained that William created Second Meridian as insurance against Lenora, then lacked the courage to expose his network. Andrew found it later and added the beneficiary lock. If Sarah released it, banks, charities, courts, and housing projects could collapse.

“You think truth is clean,” Victor said. “Thousands of innocent people lose homes when institutions fall.”

“Then the guilty should have considered them before building institutions on stolen money.”

Cole stepped forward. “I can protect Lily’s inheritance.”

“You signed an order during an attack you helped plan.”

“I preserved the trust from a woman driven by grief.”

Lily spoke. “My mother made the trust harder for herself to control.”

Victor extended his hand.

Sarah raised the sleeve. “This is a copy.”

For the first time, he looked afraid.

The real letter had been scanned. The key was separated among independent custodians. No single page could destroy it.

Grant emerged behind Lily and pressed a gun against Dr. Vale.

“You promised immunity,” he told Victor.

“You were paid.”

“You told Emma I would disappear.”

Grant dragged Lily toward a side door.

Peter swung his weapon. A shot struck the judge’s bench.

Lily dropped behind cover exactly as Marcus had taught the children at Open Gates.

Sarah ran toward her.

Victor seized the letter and fled through the records door. Dr. Vale tackled Grant’s arm. Captain Morgan’s team breached from the tunnel. Peter surrendered. Cole froze beside the witness stand.

Grant escaped into the flooded basement.

Sarah reached Lily and cut the restraints.

“I knew you would document it,” Lily whispered.

Then smoke rose through the floor.

Victor had set fire to the records tunnels.

The courthouse alarms did not sound. Someone had disabled them before the meeting.

Sarah looked at the smoke, then at Lily.

The pattern was always the same: close the room, disable the witness, force one frightened person to choose.

This time hundreds of cameras outside were already watching.
