Chapter 12 - The ReckoningAt thirty-six weeks, the time had finally come.

The labor began not with a sudden, violent spasm of pain, but with a gentle, rhythmic tightening. It was a natural, beautiful progression, completely different from the terrifying contractions of that night in the penthouse.
Evelyn was by my side within minutes, her team ready and waiting.
“Are you ready, Mara?” she asked, her eyes shining with excitement.
“I’m ready,” I said, a deep, peaceful calm settling over me.
The delivery was smooth, a testament to the strength my body had gathered during those long weeks of stillness. I didn't scream. I didn't panic. I focused every ounce of my energy on bringing my children into a world where they would never have to live in fear.
At 2:14 PM, a loud, healthy cry filled the delivery room.
“It’s a boy,” Evelyn announced, her voice thick with emotion as she placed a tiny, warm bundle on my chest.
Two minutes later, at 2:16 PM, another cry echoed through the room.
“And a girl,” Evelyn smiled, placing a second, equally perfect bundle beside her brother.

I looked down at my son and daughter, tears of pure, unadulterated joy finally flowing freely down my cheeks. The deadpan mask was gone, replaced by the radiant, fierce love of a mother who had fought a war to protect her own.
“Welcome to the world, Arthur and Alexandra,” I whispered, kissing their tiny, downy heads. “You are safe now. I promise you, you will always be safe.”
