Chapter 9 - The Power of StillnessUpstairs in Suite 4, the silence was absolute, broken only by the soft, rhythmic hum of the medical monitors.

I lay perfectly still on the bed, my head elevated just enough to see the window. The city lights of Manhattan stretched out below me, a glittering grid of power and wealth. For the first time in three years, I felt like the city belonged to me, not to the ghost of my father, and certainly not to Adrian.
The magnesium drip was working. The sharp, tearing spasms in my belly had subsided into a dull, manageable ache. The twins' heartbeats remained steady, a beautiful, syncopated rhythm on the monitor.
The door opened quietly, and Julian walked in, followed by Evelyn.
Julian stepped to the side of my bed, his face softening as he looked at the bruise on my forehead. He gently reached out and took my hand.
“The DA has the medical reports, Mara,” Julian said, his voice low and fiercely protective. “The protective order is signed. Adrian has been escorted from the building by security. He’s currently sitting in his car in the parking lot, realizing he doesn't even have enough credit on his cards to pay the parking fee.”
A small, genuine smile touched my lips. “And Vanessa?”
“She’s running back to Greenwich to beg her father for a defense lawyer,” Julian chuckled. “But her father’s firm is already under audit by the banks we control. She won't find any help there. She’ll cooperate with the DA within forty-eight hours to save her own skin.”
“Good,” I whispered. “She was always a coward when she didn't have Adrian’s money to back her up.”
Evelyn checked my IV line, her expression warm. “You did it, Mara. You took him down without saying a single word to him. The deadpan queen.”
“I had to,” I said, looking at the monitor. “If I had fought back physically, if I had screamed, he would have used it as an excuse to hurt me more. He needed my reaction to feel powerful. When I gave him nothing, he became reckless. He made mistakes.”
“The SEC is freezing Aegis’s main offices at 8:00 AM tomorrow,” Julian added. “The locks are being changed as we speak. Your name is now on the deed for every property he owned. You are, officially, the sole owner of Aegis Capital and all its subsidiaries.”
“I don't want the name Aegis,” I said, my voice firm. “Rename it. Call it Aletheia Partners. After the Greek goddess of truth.”
“Consider it done,” Julian smiled.
As they spoke, my phone on the bedside table vibrated. It was an email from Adrian’s personal account.
Mara, please. We need to talk. I’m sorry. I was stressed. The party was important. I didn't mean to hurt you. I love you. Please, think of our babies. We can work this out. Don't ruin our family.
I stared at the words, feeling absolutely nothing. No anger. No sadness. Just a profound sense of relief that the monster had finally been unmasked.
I handed the phone to Julian. “Add this to the harassment and intimidation file for the custody court. He’s trying to establish a narrative of a 'stressed husband.' Don't let him.”
“He won't even get a foot in the courtroom, Mara,” Julian promised. “I will make sure of that.”

“Now,” Evelyn said, patting my hand. “No more business. No more drama. Your only job for the next twelve weeks is to lie here, grow those babies, and let us take care of the rest.”
“Twelve weeks,” I repeated, closing my eyes. “I can do that.”
