Chapter 20 - The Call Everyone RememberedOne year later...

The ballroom where the wedding should have happened hosted another event.

Not a marriage.

A charity gala funding scholarships for young entrepreneurs.

Mary stood at the same entrance where she once arrived wearing a wedding gown.

Now she wore a midnight-blue evening dress.

Arthur stood proudly beside her.

Brooks International had returned to profitability under Mary's leadership.

Many former employees kept their jobs because she chose reform instead of revenge.

A young reporter approached.

“Ms. Collins, when did you know your engagement was over?”

Mary smiled softly.

“The moment I realized betrayal wasn't the worst thing that happened.”

“What was?”

“I almost betrayed myself by staying.”

Across the ballroom, an old television replayed security footage from the hotel corridor.

A bride opening a suite door.

A ring placed on a console table.

A phone lifted calmly.

The reporter looked at the screen.

“Was one phone call really enough to change everything?”

Mary glanced toward the image of her younger self.

“No.”

She smiled.

“The call didn't end everything.”

May you like

“It ended the lie.”

And with that, she walked into the ballroom—not as someone's bride, but as the woman who had reclaimed the life that had always been hers.
