Chapter 4 - Vanessa’s First Honest StatementVanessa requested a meeting two days later.
She arrived at Collins Capital wearing a plain gray suit and no jewelry. Without the luxury hotel, Ethan’s shirt, or the protection of secrecy, she looked exhausted rather than glamorous.
Mary sat across from her with Rachel present.
“How long?” Mary asked.
Vanessa looked down.
“Five years.”
Mary and Ethan had been together for four.
“Did he ever end the relationship?”
“He said he would.”
“That was not my question.”
“No.”
Vanessa admitted that Ethan began dating Mary because Brooks Meridian needed Collins Capital’s money.
He told Vanessa the marriage was a practical arrangement.
“He said you understood,” Vanessa whispered.
Mary’s expression did not change.
“My mother is dead. My father opposed the marriage. Who exactly arranged it for me?”
Vanessa had no answer.
She then revealed that the consulting payments had been Ethan’s idea. Money flowed through her company before moving into offshore accounts and private property investments.
“How much did you keep?” Rachel asked.
“Six million.”
“And the rest?”
“Ethan controlled it.”
Mary leaned forward.
“Why are you telling us this now?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because after you left the suite, he said the fraud was mine. He told me he would claim I forged the invoices.”
“You helped him.”
“Yes.”
“You helped him deceive me.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he planned to marry me.”
“Yes.”
Mary let the silence remain.
Vanessa was not innocent.
Fear did not erase participation.
But her evidence could prove what Ethan had done.
Rachel offered a limited cooperation agreement. Vanessa would surrender the money she still controlled, provide records, and testify truthfully.
Before leaving, Vanessa paused.
“He loved you.”
Mary looked at her.
“No. He loved what marrying me would allow him to become.”
