Chapter 9 - The Voicemail Before the WeddingTwo years later, the Manhattan hotel contacted Mary about a silver clutch discovered during renovations.

She recognized it immediately.
It was the clutch she had carried on her wedding day.
Inside remained a lipstick, an emergency sewing kit, and a second phone she had forgotten existed.
Mary charged it at home.
The screen illuminated shortly after midnight.
There were messages from the florist, her maid of honor, and the wedding coordinator.
One voicemail had been recorded seven minutes before Mary entered the presidential suite.
The caller was Vanessa.
Her voice shook.
“Mary, don’t marry him. I know you have no reason to believe me. Ethan is in the presidential suite. Ask the hotel coordinator for the rings. She’ll send you upstairs. Please come before the ceremony.”
Mary listened again.
She had believed the coordinator sent her upstairs because Ethan had forgotten the rings.
Now she understood the discovery had been arranged.
Vanessa had finally decided to expose him before the marriage became binding.
The call had arrived on the wrong phone.
But the plan still worked.
Mary found Vanessa’s current number and called.
Vanessa answered after four rings.
“Hello?”
“It’s Mary.”
Silence filled the line.
“I found your voicemail.”
Vanessa released a shaking breath.
“I wondered if you ever would.”
“Why didn’t you tell me later?”
“I thought it would sound like I wanted credit.”
“Did you?”
“Part of me did.”
Mary appreciated the honesty.
“You helped deceive me.”
“Yes.”
“You also stopped the marriage.”
“Yes.”
“Both things are true.”
Vanessa began to cry.
Mary did not forgive her.
She did not promise friendship.

They spoke for twelve minutes about the hotel coordinator, the missing rings, and the moment Vanessa finally understood Ethan would destroy them both.
When the call ended, Mary did not delete the number.
