Ethan entered with three attorneys and a carefully prepared expression of regret.
Mary entered as the company’s largest secured creditor.
Lorraine Brooks glared at her from the far end of the table.
“This family welcomed you,” Lorraine said.
Mary opened the audit file.
“Your son welcomed my money.”
The preliminary findings showed concealed defaults, false certifications, unauthorized payments, and more than $70 million transferred through companies connected to Ethan and Vanessa.
Several directors had not known the company was close to collapse.
One elderly board member removed his glasses.
“Did you sign these statements?” he asked Ethan.
Ethan’s attorneys instructed him not to answer.
His silence settled the question.
Mary proposed emergency financing under strict conditions.
Ethan would be removed as chief executive.
The Brooks family would lose control.
Independent management would operate the profitable hotels.
Unfinished developments would be sold.
Employee wages and pensions would receive priority over family shareholders.
Lorraine called the proposal revenge.
“It is restructuring,” Mary replied.
“You are stealing our company because my son made one personal mistake.”
Mary turned toward Ethan.
“Was moving seventy million dollars a personal mistake?”
No one spoke.
The board approved Mary’s plan by a vote of eight to three.
Ethan stood when the decision was announced.
“You planned to take Brooks Meridian.”
“I planned to marry you.”
“You always wanted control.”
Mary studied the man who had repeatedly used that accusation whenever she questioned him.
“I wanted a partner. You wanted permission.”
Federal investigators entered the boardroom moments later carrying warrants.
Ethan looked at Mary.
“You called them.”
“The auditors did.”
“You can stop this.”
Mary shook her head.
“That is the power you pretended I had so you could blame me for your choices.”
Agents escorted Ethan from the building.
