Mr. Brooks lied, but your decision may cost my family our apartment. Rich people recover from scandals. Workers do not.
Mary printed the message and kept it beside her laptop.
She could not save every job without continuing Ethan’s deception.
She also refused to hide behind financial terminology.
Collins Capital created a transition fund for displaced employees. Money recovered from Ethan and Vanessa helped finance it. Mary added personal funds and publicly disclosed the amount.
Reporters still accused her of purchasing sympathy.
Others called her merciless for closing unprofitable hotels.
Mary eventually stopped trying to control how strangers described her.
Her father, Henry Collins, visited during the restructuring.
He brought grilled-cheese sandwiches from the diner Mary had loved as a student.
“You look tired,” he said.
“I canceled a wedding and inherited a disaster.”
“You did not inherit it. You uncovered it.”
“I still have to decide who loses what.”
Henry sat across from her.
“That was Ethan’s last defense.”
“What?”
“He made the consequences too large for you to feel free to leave.”
Mary looked at the employee letter beside her laptop.
“What if leaving hurts innocent people?”
“It already has.”
“That doesn’t answer me.”
“No. It means there is no clean answer.”
Mary had spent her life believing competence could produce a solution without victims.
Brooks Meridian taught her otherwise.
