"Eight months after the divorce, my phone buzzed with his name. “Come to my wedding,” he said, smug as ever. “She’s pregnant—unlike you.” I froze, fingers tightening around the hospital sheet. The room still smelled of antiseptic, my body still aching from the birth he didn’t even know happened. I stared at the sleeping baby beside me and let out a slow laugh. “Sure,” I whispered. “I’ll be there.” He has no idea what I’m bringing. And when he sees it… everything will change.

CHAPTER 2 — THE WEDDING GIFT

Three weeks later.

The bruises had faded from Mia's body.

The scars had not.

She stood before the mirror fastening the last pearl button on a navy-blue dress. It wasn't extravagant. It wasn't meant to compete with the bride.

It was armor.

In the nursery, her daughter slept peacefully in a white bassinet, oblivious to the storm waiting outside.

Mia lifted the leather folder from her desk.

Inside were years of carefully preserved evidence.

Bank transfers.

Corporate invoices.

Email chains.

A notarized statement from the accountant Adrian had fired two months before the divorce.

And beneath everything else...

A sealed envelope.

She touched it gently before slipping it back inside.

"Not yet," she whispered.

Her phone buzzed.

Nathan Brooks.

Her attorney.

"Are you absolutely sure you're going?" he asked without greeting.

"I have to."

"They're expecting a broken woman."

"They'll get someone else."

Nathan hesitated.

"If Adrian acknowledges the child today..."

"He won't."

"You sound certain."

"I know him."

Silence stretched.

Finally Nathan sighed.

"Then remember the order."

"The inheritance first."

"The fraud second."

"The baby last."

Mia smiled faintly.

"No."

Nathan frowned.

"No?"

"The baby comes when they think they've already won."

...

The wedding took place at the city's most expensive vineyard.

Crystal chandeliers glittered beneath a glass ceiling.

White roses lined the marble aisle.

Every influential family Adrian had spent years trying to impress filled the seats.

Executives.

Investors.

Politicians.

Socialites.

Everyone who had believed Adrian's carefully crafted image.

The successful entrepreneur.

The devoted future father.

The man who had "escaped" an infertile wife.

Large screens displayed photographs.

Adrian and Celeste laughing in Paris.

Adrian kissing her forehead.

A sonogram.

The words appeared across the screen.

Our Miracle.

Guests applauded.

Mia stepped from the taxi.

Heads turned instantly.

Someone whispered.

"Isn't that the ex-wife?"

"I heard she couldn't have children."

"I thought she moved away."

"She looks... different."

She did.

Motherhood hadn't made her weaker.

It had made her impossible to intimidate.

In one hand she carried the leather folder.

In the other...

A covered baby stroller.

She hadn't planned to reveal it immediately.

The white blanket concealed everything inside.

The valet reached for it.

"I can—"

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"I'll keep her with me."

The valet blinked.

Her?

Before he could ask another question, Mia walked inside.

...

Near the altar, Celeste spotted her first.

The smile froze on her face.

"Adrian..."

He followed her gaze.

His lips curled.

"I honestly didn't think she'd come."

Celeste laughed under her breath.

"Look at her dress."

"Trying to appear dignified."

"Poor thing."

Adrian straightened his tuxedo.

"I'll handle it."

He crossed the reception hall with practiced confidence.

"Mia."

She looked at him politely.

"You invited me."

His eyes drifted toward the stroller.

"A friend's baby?"

"My daughter."

He barely glanced at it.

"That's nice."

He didn't even consider the possibility.

Why would he?

He believed she was incapable of giving birth.

His own lies had become his truth.

"You cleaned up well," Adrian said.

"I almost feel bad."

"You shouldn't."

"No?"

"No."

He smirked.

"You'll understand today what happiness looks like."

Mia's expression never changed.

"I hope so."

Celeste approached, one hand resting dramatically on her swollen stomach.

"Oh..."

She tilted her head.

"You actually came."

"I said I would."

Celeste's smile carried poison.

"I wanted to thank you."

"For what?"

"For leaving Adrian."

She rubbed her belly.

"Otherwise we never would have had our family."

Around them, guests quietly listened.

Mia answered softly.

"I'm sure every family begins with honesty."

Celeste stiffened.

"What does that mean?"

"It means congratulations."

The bride laughed loudly.

"I've heard bitterness before."

"This sounds familiar."

Adrian placed an arm around Celeste.

"Let's not upset Mia."

"It must be difficult watching someone else live the life she couldn't."

Several guests nodded sympathetically.

Poor infertile woman.

Poor abandoned wife.

Poor Mia.

Exactly the role Adrian wanted.

Mia simply smiled.

"I brought a wedding gift."

Adrian looked at the folder.

"I assumed."

"No."

She looked toward the stroller.

"My real gift is there."

Celeste leaned closer.

"What is it?"

"You'll see."

...

The ceremony began.

Music filled the vineyard.

Guests rose.

The officiant smiled.

"We gather today to celebrate love..."

Mia sat quietly in the back row.

One hand rested on the stroller.

Inside, her daughter slept peacefully.

Halfway through the vows...

A tiny cry echoed through the hall.

Every head turned.

Adrian frowned.

"Whose baby—"

The cry came again.

Louder.

Hungry.

Insistent.

Some guests smiled.

Others looked irritated.

Celeste rolled her eyes.

"Can someone please take that child outside?"

Mia didn't move.

The officiant paused awkwardly.

"Perhaps—"

Celeste snapped.

"Seriously?"

Mia slowly stood.

"I'm sorry."

She gently removed the white blanket.

Gasps swept across the room.

A newborn.

Barely weeks old.

Tiny fingers waving in the air.

Dark hair.

Gray-blue eyes.

Adrian stared for only a second.

Then his smile disappeared.

The baby's face...

Looked frighteningly familiar.

His mother, seated in the front row, slowly rose to her feet.

"No..."

she whispered.

"No..."

She looked from Adrian...

to the infant...

back to Adrian again.

The same eyes.

The same chin.

The same unmistakable birthmark just beneath the left ear.

A mark every male in the Vale family had carried for four generations.

Her champagne glass slipped from her hand.

It shattered across the marble floor.

The entire wedding hall fell into stunned silence.

Adrian's heartbeat thundered in his ears.

His eyes locked on the child.

Then...

On the hospital bracelet still wrapped around her tiny wrist.

It read only four words.

Baby Girl... Vale.

May you like

And for the first time since the divorce...

Fear entered Adrian's eyes.
