CHAPTER 3 — THE NAME THAT SHATTERED THE WEDDING

CHAPTER 3 — THE NAME THAT SHATTERED THE WEDDING
The silence lasted only a heartbeat.
Then the whispers exploded through the vineyard like a rising storm.
"She looks exactly like Adrian..."
"Did you see the birthmark?"
"How old is that baby?"
"I thought Mia couldn't have children..."
Crystal glasses stopped halfway to lips. Cameras lowered. Even the violinists forgot to play.
Adrian stood frozen before the altar, staring at the tiny girl in Mia's arms. His face had drained of all color.
"No..." he muttered.
Mia met his eyes without blinking.
"No?" she repeated softly.
"You told everyone I was barren."
Adrian swallowed.
"You... you were."
"I was pregnant."
The words struck harder than a slap.
Celeste's smile disappeared.
"What?"
"I found out two weeks after Adrian moved out."
Every guest turned toward Adrian.
"You never told me," he whispered.
"You blocked my number."
Mia reached into her purse and held up another phone.
"This was the fifth phone I bought after you kept blocking the others."
She placed it on a nearby table.
"There are seventy-three unanswered calls."
She looked toward the guests.
"And twenty-eight text messages."
Nathan Brooks, seated quietly in the last row, stood.
"Your Honor—"
He caught himself and smiled.
"Old habit."
The lawyer walked forward carrying another folder.
"I've brought certified records from Adrian's phone provider."
He handed them to the officiant.
"Every attempt Mrs. Vale made to contact her husband during the first month of pregnancy was rejected automatically after Mr. Adrian Vale activated a permanent block."
Several guests gasped.
One elderly investor frowned.
"So he never even gave her a chance to tell him?"
Nathan nodded.
"Correct."
Mia gently rocked her daughter.
"I wasn't hiding our child."
"I was searching for her father."
Adrian opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
His mother suddenly stepped forward.
"Adrian..."
Her voice trembled.
"Is this true?"
He couldn't answer.
Because it was.
Every word.
His mother slapped him across the face.
The sound echoed through the reception hall.
"You abandoned your own child."
Another slap.
"You called your wife barren while she was carrying your daughter."
A third.
"You disgraced this family."
No one moved to stop her.
No one wanted to.
Across the room, Celeste slowly backed away from Adrian.
She could already feel the room turning against them.
Then Mia spoke again.
"I'm not here because of the baby."
Everyone looked at her.
"I'm here because of something much larger."
She picked up the leather folder.
"And that's the real wedding gift."

The officiant looked uncomfortable.
"Mrs. Vale..."
"My name is still legally Vale," Mia replied calmly.
"The divorce may have ended our marriage."
She looked directly at Adrian.
"It didn't erase what happened before it."
She walked toward the center of the hall.
Nathan opened the folder.
"Copies for everyone."
His assistants began distributing sealed envelopes to every table.
Investors.
Board members.
Business partners.
Even reporters covering the high-profile wedding.
Adrian's heartbeat accelerated.
"What are you doing?"
Mia answered quietly.
"Returning stolen property."
The first investor opened his envelope.
His eyes widened.
"What..."
Another executive flipped through the documents.
"These account numbers..."
A third whispered,
"Those are company reserve funds."
Nathan spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear.
"For nearly eighteen months, company assets were redirected into shell corporations."
More pages appeared.
Wire transfers.
Invoices.
Fake consulting contracts.
Luxury purchases.
Every document bore signatures.
Adrian's.
Celeste's.
Several finance officers exchanged nervous glances.
One of them recognized the account immediately.
"I approved none of these."
Nathan nodded.
"Because they were hidden."
Adrian finally found his voice.
"Those papers are fake!"
"No," Mia answered.
"They're certified."
She removed another document.
"The forensic accounting report."
The company chairman snatched it from her hands.
His face darkened with every page.
"You transferred almost three million dollars."
Adrian took a step backward.
"I can explain."
"So can prison."
The words came from the chairman.
Cold.
Final.
Celeste grabbed Adrian's arm.
"Say something!"
"I..."
He couldn't.
Because every signature was real.
Every transfer had happened.
Every lie was documented.
The guests were no longer watching a wedding.
They were witnessing a corporate collapse.

Then Mia smiled for the first time.
"I'm still not finished."
