CHAPTER 5 — THE FIGHT FOR A SECOND CHANCE

CHAPTER 5 — THE FIGHT FOR A SECOND CHANCE
Three days after the wedding, every major news outlet carried the same image.
Adrian Vale, once celebrated as one of the city's youngest business success stories, sat in the back of a police vehicle with his head lowered.
Beside the article was another photograph.
Mia.
Walking away with a baby in her arms.
She never spoke to reporters.
She never gave interviews.
The silence only made people admire her more.
Inside the county detention center, Adrian had not slept.
The echoes of the wedding replayed in his mind every hour.
His daughter's tiny face.
The hospital bracelet.
The disappointment in Mia's eyes.
None of it would leave him.
His attorney entered the visitation room carrying several files.
"The fraud investigation is growing."
Adrian barely looked up.
"I don't care."
"The board has removed you as CEO."
"I said I don't care."
"The company accounts have been frozen."
Still nothing.
Finally the attorney sighed.
"You have another problem."
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
"Mia has filed for sole legal and physical custody."
His heart skipped.
"My daughter..."
"Given your abandonment, financial misconduct, and pending criminal charges, the court may grant it."
Adrian buried his face in his hands.
"I never abandoned her."
The attorney stared at him.
"You blocked your wife's number."
"You ignored every message."
"You publicly claimed she couldn't have children."
"You invited her to your wedding."
He closed the folder.
"The judge will call that abandonment."
For the first time since his arrest...
Adrian cried.
Across town, Mia was rocking her daughter to sleep when someone knocked gently at her door.
Nathan stood outside.
"They're requesting mediation."
She laughed softly.
"So soon?"
"Adrian wants visitation."
Mia looked toward the nursery.
"He met her once."
"For less than a minute."
Nathan nodded.
"I know."
He handed her a letter.
"It isn't from his lawyer."
She unfolded it.
It was handwritten.
Mia,
I deserve every consequence that has come.
I cannot ask you to forgive me.
But I am begging you not to let my daughter grow up believing I never wanted her.
I was arrogant enough to think you had nothing left to tell me.
That mistake has destroyed everything.
Please... let me meet her properly.
Not because I deserve it.
Because one day she deserves to know I tried.
—Adrian
Mia folded the letter slowly.
There were tears on the page.
Real ones.
She could tell.
Nathan watched her carefully.
"What are you thinking?"
"I'm thinking..."
She looked toward the nursery.
"My daughter deserves truth."
"Not revenge."
A week later, the family court approved one supervised visit.
No cameras.
No media.
Just one hour.
Adrian entered the visitation room wearing plain clothes instead of an expensive suit.
He looked thinner.
Older.
The confidence that once defined him had vanished.
Mia was already there.
Their daughter slept peacefully in her stroller.
Adrian stopped several feet away.
"May I..."
Mia nodded once.
He knelt beside the stroller.
Tiny fingers stretched toward him in her sleep.
He hesitated before touching one.
She wrapped her entire hand around his finger.
So small.
So trusting.
His shoulders began shaking.
"I missed everything," he whispered.
Mia answered quietly.
"Yes."
"I'll never get it back."
"No."
He lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
She watched him for a long moment.
"I believe you're sorry."
His eyes lifted hopefully.
"But being sorry doesn't make someone ready to be a father."
The hope faded.
"I know."
When the hour ended, Adrian kissed his daughter's forehead.
"I'll earn the next visit."
May you like
Mia didn't promise anything.
But she didn't say no.
