Chapter 19 - THE FIRE UNDER THE CITY

The fire moved too quickly to be accidental. Fuel had been poured through tunnels leading toward the municipal data vault.
Victor was not merely destroying his escape route. He was trying to erase land records, sealed cases, and evidence corroborating Second Meridian.
Captain Morgan ordered evacuation.
Sarah refused to leave without Marcus. He had entered the basement after Grant and had not responded.
Lily grabbed her sleeve. “You told me adults are responsible.”
The words stopped her.
Running into smoke felt like love. Andrew had made the same mistake in another form, building secret systems alone because he could not bear to trust anyone else.
Sarah allowed firefighters to do their work.
Three minutes later, they carried Marcus out unconscious. He had found Grant trapped beneath a beam and dragged him toward the stairs before collapsing. Grant survived with burns and a broken leg.
Victor did not emerge.
Investigators assumed he died until a street camera captured a sanitation truck leaving during the evacuation. The driver wore a firefighter’s coat. In his right hand was the evidence sleeve.
Victor had escaped again.
The municipal data vault survived. Lily’s memory card, Grant’s phone, and the courthouse recordings remained intact.
Marcus woke the next morning.
His first words were, “Did the cameras work?”
Sarah laughed and cried. “Most of them.”
Lily sat beside him. “You went back for Grant.”
“He was still a person in a burning building.”
“He hurt Emma and Noah.”
“Yes.”
“Did you want to leave him?”
“For one second.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because justice happens after everyone gets out alive.”
Grant began cooperating. He provided Northbridge access codes and described Victor’s emergency plan. A private aircraft waited at a rural airfield under the name William Reed.
Agents arrived too late.
Inside the hangar they found a red leather ledger. Most pages had been removed. One remained.
At the top: OPEN GATES.
Below were the names of every resident.
Beside Emma and Noah: PRESSURE POINT.
Beside Marcus: REMOVE.
Beside Lily: KEY.
Beside Sarah: MAKE HER CLOSE THE GATES HERSELF.
Fear entered the estate not as broken glass but as packed bags, missed school days, and parents studying exits. Sarah understood Victor’s real strategy.

He did not need to destroy Open Gates.
He needed the people inside to believe safety had always been an illusion.
