Chapter 2: The Mercy Plea

"Help me! Please!" Elena screamed, her voice tearing through the stillness.

A figure appeared in the doorway—Sarah, the nurse she had hired just three weeks ago. Sarah’s eyes widened, darting from the man in the charcoal suit to the woman trembling on the ledge. The air felt heavy, saturated with the frantic energy of a trapped animal. Sarah rushed forward, not toward Julian, but toward Elena.

"I've got you," Sarah whispered, her grip firm on Elena's forearm.

Julian didn't flinch. He watched them with the clinical detachment of a scientist observing a failed experiment. "You’re making a mistake, Sarah," he warned, his tone dangerously calm. "Do you have any idea what she is? Do you know the sickness that festers beneath that desperate facade?"

Sarah locked eyes with him, her jaw set. "I don't care who she is. I only know who you are."

The tension hummed in the wires of their nerves. The nurse, a woman paid to sustain life, was now the only thing anchoring Elena to it. But Elena looked at Sarah and saw not just a savior, but a woman who was also terrified. The house, usually a sanctuary of glass and steel, felt like a cage closing in. The game had shifted. It was no longer a negotiation; it was a siege.
