Chapter 5: The Glass Ceiling

They hit the lower balcony with a bone-jarring thud. Elena scrambled up, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Julian was already there, waiting. He hadn't run; he had simply taken the elevator.

"You really are persistent," Julian remarked, adjusting his cufflinks. "It’s almost admirable."

"Why?" Elena sobbed, stepping back until her heels hit the glass railing.

"Because the world is built on stories, Elena. And a tragedy with a beautiful, grieving widow is a much better story than a messy divorce settlement."

He stepped toward them, and for the first time, Sarah didn't retreat. She reached into her pocket, pulling out a small, metallic object—a recording device. The look on Julian’s face flickered for a fraction of a second, the first crack in his armor.

"You think you're the only one who plays the long game?" Sarah said, her voice dripping with venom. "I wasn't hired by an agency, Julian. I was sent by the board. They’ve known about your 'legacies' for months."
