Chapter 18: The Letter

Six months later, a letter arrived at Valeria's office.

It bore the stamp of a maximum-security federal facility. The handwriting on the envelope was frantic, messy—Sebastián’s handwriting.

Her assistant, looking nervous, had placed it gently on the center of Valeria's desk.

Valeria looked at the envelope. It represented the desperate, dying gasp of a man who had finally realized he was entirely powerless. He was likely begging for a visitation, or money for a better lawyer, or simply trying to inflict one last ounce of guilt.

Valeria picked up the envelope. She didn't feel a spike of fear. She didn't feel curiosity. She felt absolutely nothing.

She walked over to the heavy-duty paper shredder in the corner of her office.

She fed the unopened envelope into the machine.

The blades whirred to life, grinding the paper, the ink, and Sebastián’s final words into microscopic, illegible strips of confetti.

She turned off the machine and went back to work.
