Chapter 4: Threads in the Shadow

The screen of the private phone continued to flicker. The reflection of the bluish light illuminated the president's face, which remained motionless before the large window of her office. Gabriel Reyes stepped forward, his expression tense.

"Madam President? Don't answer. We could trace the signal if you give me a few minutes with the cybersecurity team," Gabriel suggested in a whisper.

She raised a hand, silencing him. She swiped her finger across the screen and held the phone to her ear. She said nothing. She waited.

On the other end of the line, there was a slow, deliberate breathing, followed by a digitally distorted voice, cold and devoid of any human trace.

"Congratulations on getting your toy back, Valeria," the voice said. "Your father was clever to set up that trust, but he made a fatal mistake: believing that the money of a bunch of penniless freeloaders like your ex-husband would be enough to stop us."

Valeria gritted her teeth, her voice as firm as steel.

“Who are you? My lawyers and the forensic auditor are already tracing every penny that went into my ex-husband’s accounts. If you think you’re going to hide behind a voice modulator, you’re sorely mistaken.”

A metallic laugh crackled through the receiver.

“Search all you want. What you find at that foreign subsidiary will be just the tip of the iceberg. You have seven days before the next general shareholders’ meeting. If you haven’t resigned by then, the secret your father gave his life for will be out. Enjoy the office while you can.”

The call ended. Valeria slowly lowered the phone.

“Gabriel,” she said, turning to her advisor. “Forget about the divorce for a moment. That’s already in the hands of the prosecutor’s office. I need you to open the dormant file from the Swiss subsidiary from three years ago. My father blocked a multimillion-dollar investment right before he fell ill. That’s where it all started.”

Gabriel nodded, his eyes filled with determination.

"We'll get on it right away. But remember one thing, Valeria: if we touch that branch, we'll awaken the real sharks of the City."
