Chapter 5: The Geneva subsidiary

Three days later, the main office had become a bunker. Financial reports, organizational charts, and bank statements covered the large boardroom table. Cold coffee was the only thing keeping Valeria awake, as she juggled emergency meetings to stabilize the company with the few hours she spent cradling her son.
Gabriel entered without knocking, a red folder under his arm. He looked exhausted from seventy-two hours without sleep.
"We've got it, Valeria. Or at least part of it," he said, dropping the folder onto the table. "Your ex-husband's family business was completely bankrupt before you married him. Someone injected twelve million euros through a shell company based in the Cayman Islands, but the originating bank was our own group's Geneva branch."
Valeria frowned, scrutinizing the documents.
“Wait… Are you telling me someone used my own company’s money to finance the people who ruined my life?”
“Exactly. Someone on the board authorized that confidential transfer,” Gabriel explained. “And there’s more. The authorization document has an authorized digital signature. It’s not your father’s. It’s Alejandro De la Vega’s.”
Valeria felt a chill run down her spine. Alejandro De la Vega was the vice president of the board, her father’s best friend, and the man who had watched her grow up.

“It can’t be,” Valeria whispered. “Alejandro was by my side at Dad’s funeral. He told me he would take care of me…”
“Greed knows no loyalty, Valeria,” Gabriel stated harshly. “And Alejandro controls forty percent of the remaining shares. If he’s behind this, next week’s meeting won’t be a meeting… it will be an execution.”
