Chapter 1 - THE FIRST WORD IN TWO YEARS

The bathroom doors opened before Emma could answer Renata.
Two security guards entered first.
Grant Callahan followed them.
He had returned from Manhattan earlier than expected with three members of the Callahan Foundation board.
His tuxedo jacket remained unbuttoned.
Snowmelt darkened the shoulders of his black overcoat.
He stopped when he saw Renata beside the bathtub.
Then he looked at Emma holding Lily.
The child’s face was buried in Emma’s apron.
A burned section of hair stood jagged above her left ear.
Smoke still curled from the styling wand on the floor.
Renata spoke first.
“Thank God you’re here.”
“She attacked me.”
Grant’s gaze moved to the red mark on Renata’s arm.
Then to Emma.
“What happened?”
Emma’s mouth went dry.
She knew how this scene looked.
The maid standing in the master bathroom with the billionaire’s daughter clinging to her.
The glamorous fiancée bruised beside the tub.
The police already being summoned.
Renata stepped closer to Grant.
“She burst in while I was styling Lily’s hair.”
“She knocked me down.”
“Then she tried to take Lily.”
Emma tightened her arms around the child.
“She held the iron against Lily’s scalp.”
Renata laughed.
“She moved suddenly.”
“It was an accident.”
“It was not an accident.”
Emma pointed toward the burned hair.
“She warned Lily that next time she would move closer to her ear.”
One guard looked down at the curling iron.
The temperature display still read four hundred and fifty degrees.
Grant’s expression became unreadable.
“Lily.”
The child did not move.
Grant lowered himself carefully.
“Sweetheart, look at me.”
Lily’s fingers twisted inside Emma’s apron.
Renata folded her arms.
“She has been impossible all afternoon.”
“She refuses to cooperate with anything.”
Emma looked at Grant.
“Do not make her go to Renata.”
The senior security guard stepped forward.
“Mr. Callahan, the police are arriving.”
“Ms. Cole reported an assault.”
Renata nodded.
“Yes.”
“Emma is dangerous.”
Lily suddenly lifted her face.
Tears covered her cheeks.
Her mouth opened.
At first, no sound came out.
Grant stopped breathing.
Everyone in the house knew Lily had not spoken since her mother died.
Doctors called it traumatic mutism.
Therapists had spent two years waiting for a sound.
Lily looked directly at her father.
Then she whispered two words.
“She burned.”
Grant’s knees nearly gave way.
Renata’s face emptied.
Emma stared at the child in her arms.
Lily pointed toward Renata.
“She burned me.”
The sentence was barely audible.
It still changed everything.
Grant stood.
His voice became colder than the marble beneath them.
“No one removes Emma from this room.”
Renata stepped toward him.
“Grant, she is manipulating Lily.”
He moved between Renata and the child.
“Do not touch my daughter.”
The first police officer entered.
Renata immediately began crying.
Emma had never seen tears appear so quickly.
“I was attacked in my own home.”
Grant looked at the officer.
“This is my home.”
“My daughter has an obvious injury.”
“I want an ambulance.”
“I also want every person in this bathroom separated.”
Renata grabbed his sleeve.
“You’re believing a maid over me?”
Grant looked at Lily.
“No.”
“I’m believing my daughter.”
The house engineer arrived with a tablet.
He had been monitoring the security alert.
“Mr. Callahan, there may be something you should hear.”
Renata turned sharply.
“What?”
The engineer swallowed.
“The intercom stores ninety seconds of audio before every emergency call.”
“You activated the bathroom panel when you contacted security.”
May you like
The color disappeared from Renata’s face.
The recording had begun before Emma entered.
