Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER AT THE BOARDROOM DOOR

Owen Callahan arrived at the hospital before police could find him.

He wore a camel overcoat and the expression of a concerned uncle.

Grant met him in the corridor.

“You should not be here.”

“I heard about Lily.”

“From whom?”

“Renata called me.”

“She is under investigation.”

Owen looked through the window toward Lily.

“She said the maid attacked her.”

“Her name is Emma.”

“I know the staff directory.”

Grant handed him a printed email.

Owen read it.

His expression barely changed.

“You accessed private communications.”

“The police did.”

“This was negotiation.”

“You planned to use Lily’s disability to take the company.”

“I planned to protect Callahan Industrial from you.”

“By helping the woman who abused my daughter?”

Owen lowered his voice.

“I did not know about that.”

“You knew about the false guardianship reports.”

“I thought Lily needed permanent care.”

“You never spoke to her.”

“She does not speak to anyone.”

Emma opened the hospital-room door.

Lily stood beside her holding a whiteboard.

She had written one sentence.

I HEARD YOU LAUGH.

Owen stared.

Lily wrote another.

AT MOMMY’S FUNERAL.

Grant looked at his brother.

Owen’s face became pale.

Lily remembered Owen standing with Renata after Claire’s burial.

She remembered them discussing the company while Grant remained beside the grave.

Her silence had never meant she did not understand.

Owen stepped backward.

“This is absurd.”

Lily lifted the board.

YOU SAID NOW HE HAS NOTHING BUT THE MUTE GIRL.

Emma watched Grant absorb the sentence.

His brother had reduced his only child to an obstacle at her mother’s funeral.

Owen left before police reached the floor.

Security cameras showed him entering the parking garage.

He did not reach his car.

A black SUV took him through the service exit.

The vehicle belonged to Victor Dane’s security company.

Owen was not escaping alone.

He was being protected or removed.

Detective Ruiz issued an alert.

Grant returned to Lily’s room.

She had begun shaking.

Emma sat beside her.

Grant stopped at the doorway.

“May I come closer?”

Lily looked at him.

Then she nodded.

He sat on the floor instead of the bed.

“I am sorry.”

Lily wrote on the board.

FOR WHAT?

Grant’s voice broke.

“For believing silence meant you had nothing to say.”

“For leaving you with Renata.”

“For letting work become the reason I was never in the room when you needed me.”

Lily studied him.

Then she wrote:

DID YOU LOVE MOM?

“Yes.”

DID RENATA?

Grant looked toward the rain outside.

“I do not know if Renata loves anyone in a safe way.”

Lily erased the board slowly.

Then she wrote the sentence that gave investigators their first direct witness account.

RENATA SAID MOM FOUND THE MISSING MONEY.
