Chapter 7 - THE JOB THAT WAS NEVER AN ACCIDENT
Emma’s employment application had originally been rejected.
Renata reversed the decision personally.
She told human resources that Emma’s financial situation would make her loyal.
The phrase appeared inside an email.
She needs the insurance too much to interfere.
Grant read the message in silence.
Emma stood across from him inside the hospital conference room.
“I thought you hired me.”
“I approved a list.”
“I never saw the financial notes.”
“That does not change what happened.”
“No.”
Grant placed the file on the table.
“Your mother’s insurance will continue.”
Emma’s expression hardened.
“Do not offer it as charity.”
“I am not.”
“It is compensation connected to employment.”
“Then put it in writing through an independent administrator.”
“Not through you.”
Grant nodded.
“Done.”
Emma had expected powerful men to become offended when she created boundaries.
Grant wrote the request down.
That mattered.
Detective Ruiz found another document inside Renata’s files.
It was a dismissal plan.
Once Grant and Renata married, Emma would be accused of stealing jewelry.
Police would discover the items inside her locker.
Her mother’s insurance would end immediately.
Renata planned to replace Emma with a private nurse loyal to Victor.
Lily would become completely isolated.
The gala had been the final test.
Renata wanted Lily silent, sedated, beautifully dressed, and publicly displayed.
When Lily resisted, Renata burned her.
Emma’s interruption destroyed the timeline.
Renata’s attorney requested a meeting.
She offered information about Claire’s death in exchange for reduced charges.
Grant refused to attend.
Detective Ruiz handled the negotiation.
Renata blamed Owen.
She claimed he ordered Victor to damage Claire’s brakes.
She said she tried to stop them.
The emails showed otherwise.
Renata wrote:
Make it look like the mountain.
No city cameras.
Victor replied:
The child is in the car.
Renata answered:
She is too young to remember.
Lily had remembered everything.
The rain.
The silver tool.
Renata beside the vehicle.
The hospital threat.
The funeral laughter.
She simply had no safe place to place the memory.
When Ruiz confronted Renata with the messages, Renata stopped cooperating.
Hours later, the hospital’s lights failed.
Emergency power activated within seconds.
Lily’s room remained empty.
The window was open.
Emma’s heart stopped.
A nurse lay unconscious near the stairwell.
On Lily’s pillow rested a broken lock of honey-colored hair.
