Chapter 11 - WHAT LILY SAID AFTER TWO YEARS
Lily did not stop speaking after the mountain.
Her voice remained quiet.
Some days, she used only one or two words.
Other days, she returned to drawing.
Her therapist explained that recovery was not a door that stayed permanently open.
Speech had returned because Lily felt a sudden need stronger than fear.
Safety would teach her she could continue using it.
At the hospital, Grant sat beside her.
“Do you want me here?”
“Yes.”
“Do you want Emma here?”
Lily reached toward Emma.
“Yes.”
Emma sat on the other side.
Lily held both their hands.
She did not choose one safe adult by rejecting the other.
Detective Ruiz recorded Lily’s statement in short sessions.
Lily described the night Claire died.
Renata stood beside the red SUV holding a metal cutter.
Victor watched the driveway.
Owen waited inside another car.
Lily saw Renata kneel beside the front wheel.
Later, the brakes failed.
Claire told Lily to hold on.
The vehicle struck the guardrail.
After the crash, Lily woke upside down.
Claire was alive.
She told Lily:
“Tell Daddy it was Renata.”
Then Victor reached the vehicle before the ambulance.
He pulled Lily out.
Renata arrived at the hospital.
She leaned over the child’s bed.
“If you speak, Daddy goes over the mountain too.”
Lily believed her.
Each time she tried to tell Grant, Renata appeared nearby.
The silence became protection inside Lily’s mind.
Grant listened to the recording once.
He never asked Lily to repeat it for him.
Victor accepted a plea agreement.
He admitted suppressing the brake report and assisting the kidnapping.
He blamed Owen and Renata for the murder plan.
The evidence showed he had received six million dollars.
He received no immunity.
Renata’s attempt to blame Owen collapsed.
Her fingerprints were found on the cutting tool recovered from Victor’s storage unit.
Claire’s blood remained inside its handle from the emergency kit she had used after a workplace accident days earlier.
The tool belonged to her garage.
Renata had taken it from the estate.
Owen’s lodge camera also recorded his confession.
Lily broke the device before the memory transmitted.
