Chapter 12 - THE TRIAL OF RENATA COLE

Renata’s trial began eleven months later.

She wore a cream suit and no visible jewelry.

Her attorneys described Emma as an unstable employee who became obsessed with Lily.

They claimed Grant used the maid to avoid responsibility for neglecting his daughter.

Emma testified without pretending she had been calm.

“I pushed Ms. Cole.”

“Why?”

“She was holding a curling iron against Lily’s scalp.”

“Did you consider calling security?”

“The iron was already burning her.”

“You needed this job.”

“Yes.”

“Your mother needed the insurance.”

“Yes.”

“Were you angry at wealthy employers?”

“I was angry at one woman hurting a child.”

The prosecutor played the bathroom audio.

Renata’s own voice filled the courtroom.

Flinch again and I’ll get closer to your ear.

Then the guardianship documents appeared.

The drugged honey.

The photographs of injuries.

The emails about Emma.

The brake-line messages.

Renata stopped looking toward the jury.

Lily testified through a protected recorded interview.

She wore her yellow cardigan.

Emma sat outside the room.

Grant was not permitted inside.

Lily needed her statement to belong to her.

The interviewer asked why she had not spoken for two years.

“Renata said Daddy would die.”

“Did you believe her?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you speak in the bathroom?”

“Emma came.”

“Why did that matter?”

“She believed my face.”

The sentence silenced the courtroom.

Emma had not needed Lily to explain everything before acting.

She had recognized fear.

She had smelled burned hair.

She had moved.

Renata was convicted of murder, attempted guardianship fraud, child abuse, poisoning, kidnapping conspiracy, and witness intimidation.

She received life imprisonment without parole.

Owen received forty-eight years.

Victor received thirty-five after cooperation.

Two doctors who signed false incompetency reports lost their licenses and received prison sentences.

Several foundation executives were convicted of financial crimes.

At sentencing, Renata looked toward Grant.

“You chose a maid over your future wife.”

Grant answered quietly.

“I chose my daughter after failing to choose her soon enough.”

Renata turned toward Emma.

“You think you won?”

Emma looked at Lily.

“This was never a contest.”
