Chapter 1: The Family Dinner Trap

The table was set with Genesis’s finest linen and crystal, the kind of display that screamed old money even though Jackson’s family had been living off handouts for years. Twenty people crammed into the formal dining room of his parents’ sprawling suburban house. Laughter and clinking glasses filled the air, but beneath it all was the familiar tension I had learned to recognize in the three years of our marriage.

I had bought my apartment with my own money four years before I even met Jackson Hale. It was my safe place, my investment, my independence. Tonight, they were treating it like community property.

Jackson’s mother, Margaret, leaned forward with a sweet smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “It only makes sense, dear. With Jackson’s promotion coming up, we need a proper family base. Your apartment is centrally located. We could move in next month.”

His father nodded. “And of course, you’ll contribute $1,200 monthly for living expenses. Family supports family.”

I set my fork down. “No.”

The table went quiet.

Jackson’s face flushed red from too much wine. “You have no idea how to be a wife!” he shouted, standing so fast his chair scraped loudly. “That apartment should belong to this family now!”

Before I could respond, he grabbed a plate loaded with food and hurled it straight at my head.

The porcelain shattered against my temple. Pain exploded. Hot sauce and blood streamed down my face onto my white blouse. Shards scattered across the table like broken promises.

No one screamed. No one stood up. No one helped.

I slowly pushed my chair back and rose, blood dripping onto the expensive linen. I wiped my face with a napkin, looked Jackson dead in the eyes, and spoke the words that froze the entire room.

“You have no idea what I’m capable of.”

Then I pulled out my phone and dialed.

“Good evening,” I said calmly into the speaker. “I need the police and an ambulance. My husband just assaulted me in front of his entire family. Every person here is a witness.”

Jackson’s face went white. For the first time that night, real fear flickered in his eyes.
