Chapter 3: Shadows of the Past

Flashback to how it started. I was a successful financial analyst when I met Jackson at a charity gala. He was charming, ambitious, from a “respectable” family. I ignored the early red flags — his quick temper, the way he slowly isolated me from my friends, the constant comments about my “independent streak” needing to be softened.
After we married, his family’s financial troubles became my problem. They drained our joint accounts. They expected me to fund their lifestyle while I worked overtime to keep my apartment as my safety net.
