Chapter 1 - The Clock and the Poisoned GlassThe silent camera feed on the small phone screen glowed like a beacon of horrifying truth in the dim light of the mansion.

Ethan Blackwood stared down at the live video. The woman lying on the narrow hospital bed looked impossibly thin, her face bearing the faint, pale traces of burn scars along her jawline, but there was zero doubt in his mind.
It was Amelia.
His wife. The woman he had wept over for seven agonizing years. The woman whose empty coffin he had visited every year on the anniversary of the fire that shattered his life.
On the screen, Victor Blackwood stood by the bedside, slowly tapping the side of a glass syringe to remove the air bubbles. His expression was cold, devoid of a single drop of human mercy.
"Papa..." Lily’s small voice broke the silence, her tiny hand clutching the hem of Ethan’s sleeve. "Is Mommy going to sleep forever?"
Ethan dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around his daughter for the very first time. His chest heaved as silent, racking sobs tore through him, seven years of buried grief transforming into an electric, blinding rage. He held her close, feeling the steady warmth of her heart beating against his ribcage.
She's real, he thought, kissing the top of her head. My daughter is alive.
"No, sweetheart," Ethan whispered into her hair, his voice turning to pure steel as he looked up. "Mommy is coming home tonight."
He stood up, turning toward his chief of security, Marcus—a former military commander who had served the Blackwood family for over a decade. Marcus’s face was pale, his fists clenched as he watched the monitor.
"Marcus," Ethan commanded, his tone dropping an octave. "Track the IP address of that video feed immediately. I want the exact satellite coordinates of that facility in under three minutes."
"Already on it, boss," Marcus growled, tapping rapidly on his tactical tablet. "It’s routed through a proxy, but it’s local. Signal originates from the old Blackwood Medical Annexe in the North District—less than twenty minutes away."
Ethan turned his gaze toward Nora. The housekeeper was pinned against the marble wall by two security guards, her face slick with tears and sweat.
"The tea," Ethan said, looking down at the porcelain cup sitting undisturbed on the side table. "How long does digitalis take to act?"
"T-Twenty minutes for cardiac distress..." Nora stammered, shaking violently. "An hour for full arrest... Victor wanted it to look like a natural heart attack brought on by stress before the board meeting tomorrow..."
A dark, terrifying smile touched Ethan’s lips. "Then we are right on schedule."
He turned to Marcus. "Call Dr. Hayes. Have him prepare a sealed bio-hazard containment kit for that cup. I'm taking it with me."
"Ethan, what are you planning?" Dr. Hayes asked, stepping back into the grand foyer with the evidence bag. "If your uncle sees you alive—"
"My uncle believes I’m going to drink this tea at midnight," Ethan interrupted calmly. "He thinks by 8:00 AM tomorrow, he will walk into the Blackwood Enterprises boardroom as the sole remaining heir to the family trust. I am going to let him believe he’s winning... right until I tear his world apart."
He picked up the sealed bag containing the poisoned tea and slid it into his inner jacket pocket. Then, he looked down at Lily.
"Lily," Ethan said, crouching back down to her eye level. "I need you to stay here with Dr. Hayes and three of my best men. The house is completely locked down. Nobody gets in or out."
Lily grabbed his thumbs with her small hands, her dark eyes filling with fresh tears. "Don't leave me, Daddy. What if he hurts you too?"
The word Daddy sent a wave of electric warmth straight to Ethan's core. He reached out and gently cupped her cheek, brushing a tear away with his thumb.
"Nobody is ever going to hurt our family again, Lily," Ethan swore softly. "I spent seven years in the dark. But tonight, I’m bringing your mother back."
Within two minutes, three heavy black SUVs roared out of the grand gates of the Blackwood estate, tearing through the rain-slicked streets of the city toward the North District.
The Blackwood Medical Annexe was a forgotten, gray-concrete structure tucked behind a dense patch of woodland. Once a prestigious private research facility, it had been officially decommissioned six years ago following a mysterious administrative budget cut.
In reality, it was Victor Blackwood’s private prison.
Inside Room 402, the air smelled heavily of antiseptic and stale dampness.
Victor stood over Amelia’s bed, adjusting the flow rate of the IV drip hooked into her arm. He looked at his watch.
11:45 PM.
"You were always so stubborn, Amelia," Victor mused aloud to the unconscious woman, sliding the syringe into his coat pocket for now. "If you had just signed over your trust shares to me seven years ago, I would have let you raise the child in peace somewhere far away. But you had to fight. You had to insist on keeping everything for Ethan."
Amelia’s eyelids fluttered weakly. Her lips parted, a dry, faint whisper escaping her throat: "Ethan..."
Victor chuckled—a dry, grating sound. "Ethan is currently enjoying his bedtime tea at the mansion. In about fifteen minutes, his heart will give out. By morning, the paramedics will declare it a sudden, unfortunate cardiac event. The board will have no choice but to elect me as permanent Chairman."
He leaned closer to her, his eyes cold and devoid of life. "And as for you... once the board votes, a small 'malfunction' in your life support will close this chapter forever. You and your daughter can finally be reunited in whatever comes next."
Suddenly, the lights in the corridor outside flickered once... twice... and died.
The room plunged into red emergency backup lighting.
Victor frowned, his eyebrows pulling together in annoyance. "What is wrong with those useless guards?"
He reached into his jacket for his phone, but before he could dial the front desk, the heavy steel door of Room 402 was kicked off its hinges with a deafening CRACK.
The metal door slammed into the far wall, showering the room with drywall dust.
Victor stumbled back, pulling a snub-nosed revolver from his holster. "Who's there?! I'll shoot!"
Through the dust and red light, a tall figure stepped into the room.
He wasn't wearing tactical gear. He didn't have a weapon raised. He was dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his hands casually resting in his pockets.
Victor’s hand trembled as his eyes locked onto the intruder’s face. The revolver wobbled in his grip.
"E-Ethan...?" Victor choked out, his voice instantly losing all its authority. "No... no, this is impossible... you're... you're supposed to be—"
"Dying?" Ethan finished the sentence, stepping slowly into the room.
Behind Ethan, Marcus and four heavily armed tactical guards poured into the space, their laser sights instantly painting Victor’s chest with five bright red dots.
"Drop the gun, Victor," Marcus ordered, his voice cold as ice.
Victor’s eyes darted frantically from the red dots on his chest to Ethan’s calm, terrifying expression. The gun slipped from his nervous fingers, clattering uselessly against the linoleum floor.
Ethan ignored his uncle entirely. He walked past him, stepping directly to the side of the hospital bed.
His eyes fell on Amelia.
Her pale face was thin, her skin cool to the touch, but as Ethan gently reached out and rested his warm hand over hers, her fingers twitched. Her dark brown eyes slowly fluttered open, struggling to focus in the red light.
"E... Ethan...?" she breathed, a single tear cutting through the dust on her cheek. "Am I... dreaming...?"
Ethan dropped to his knees beside her bed, pulling her weak hand to his lips and kissing her knuckles, tears spilling freely over his face.
"You're not dreaming, my love," Ethan choked out, his voice cracking with seven years of suppressed heartache. "I found you. I found our daughter. You're safe now."
Amelia’s eyes widened with a sudden, desperate surge of life. "Lily...? You... you have Lily...?"
"She's at the house. She saved my life tonight, Amelia," Ethan whispered, brushing her hair back from her forehead. "She brought me back to you."
Behind them, Victor let out a desperate, mocking laugh as Marcus forced his arms behind his back, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
"You think you've won, Ethan?!" Victor sneered, his face contorted in bitter fury. "Look around you! The media knows nothing! The board knows nothing! Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, the proxy votes are already locked in! Even if I'm in a cell, my legal team will execute the corporate takeover automatically based on my trust shares! You have no proof of anything!"
Ethan slowly stood up, turning to face his uncle.
He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out the clear, sealed evidence bag containing the porcelain tea cup.
He held it up to the light, the clear liquid inside reflecting the red glow of the room.
"I have the poison, Victor," Ethan said softly. "I have Nora's signed confession. I have the live video feed of you standing over my wife with a syringe. And tomorrow morning..."
May you like
Ethan stepped closer, leaning in until he was inches from his uncle's ear.
"...I am going to walk into that boardroom with my wife and my daughter. And I am going to make you drink every single drop of your own greed."
