Chapter 4 - Stripping the RotIn the weeks following the catastrophic downfall of Victor Blackwood, the city experienced a corporate and legal cleansing unlike any in its history.

With Ethan reassuming full, unchecked command of Blackwood Enterprises, he unleashed his legal and forensic teams to dismantle every single branch of Victor’s corrupt network.
The private medical annexe in the North District was seized by federal authorities, revealing a underground paper trail that implicated dozens of high-ranking city officials, corrupt doctors, and paid-off precinct commanders who had helped cover up the original hospital fire seven years ago.
Nora, the housekeeper who had accepted Victor's blood money to keep Lily hidden in the servant quarters, faced a federal grand jury. In exchange for avoiding a life sentence, she provided detailed testimony exposing how Victor had manipulated the hospital records, paid off the coroner, and forced nurses to sign false death certificates for Amelia and baby Lily.
Inside the Blackwood Mansion, the dark, oppressive atmosphere that had hung over the estate for seven years vanished completely.
The servants' wing was dismantled and renovated into an open, sunlit arts-and-crafts pavilion for Lily. The gloomy drapes throughout the home were replaced with warm, cream-colored silks that let the morning sunlight pour across the marble floors.
On a warm Tuesday afternoon, Dr. Hayes conducted a final, comprehensive medical evaluation of Amelia in the mansion’s private suite.
"Her pulmonary function has improved by forty percent," Dr. Hayes announced, smiling as he removed his stethoscope. "The burn scars on her jawline are responding exceptionally well to the laser therapy. But most importantly... her emotional vitals are steady. She is fully recovered, Ethan."
Amelia sat on the edge of the bed, wearing a soft cardigan, her dark brown hair tied back cleanly. She looked vibrant, healthy, and filled with a peace she hadn't known in nearly a decade.
"Thank you, Samuel," Amelia said gently, reaching out to squeeze the old doctor's hand. "For everything."
Once Dr. Hayes left the room, Ethan walked over and sat beside her, gently taking her face into his hands. He looked into her eyes, marveling at the miracle of her presence.
"You look so beautiful, Amelia," Ethan murmured, his thumb lightly stroking her cheekbone. "Every time I wake up beside you, I still fear it’s a dream."
Amelia leaned into his touch, wrapping her hands around his wrists. "It's not a dream, Ethan. We survived the dark. But now... we have a daughter to teach how to live in the light."
Suddenly, the bedroom door burst open, and Lily ran inside, holding a large drawing paper covered in bright watercolors.
"Mommy! Daddy! Look!" Lily squeaked excitedly, jumping onto the bed between them.
The drawing depicted a massive house under a bright yellow sun. In the front yard were three figures holding hands: a tall man in a suit, a woman in a green dress, and a little girl in yellow pajamas holding a small dog.
Above the house, written in large, colorful crayon letters, were the words: OUR HAPPY HOME.
Ethan pulled both Amelia and Lily into his lap, kissing his daughter's cheek while Amelia wrapped her arms around them both.
"It's perfect, sweetheart," Ethan smiled, his heart swelling with a deep, unbreakable joy. "In fact, I think we should frame it and put it in the main lobby at Blackwood Tower."

Lily giggled, hugging her parents tightly. "Right next to the big painting of Grandpa?"
"Right next to Grandpa," Ethan agreed softly.
