Chapter 2 - The Fire in the Reclaimed HomeThe medical transport vehicle cut through the drizzling rain back toward the Blackwood estate, escorted by a convoy of armored SUVs. Inside, oxygen hummed softly, and the steady monitor readouts confirmed that Amelia’s vitals were stabilizing under the direct care of Dr. Hayes.

Ethan sat beside his wife's gurney, his large, warm hand refusing to release hers for even a second.
"She has suffered from chronic malnutrition, deliberate sedation, and severe isolation," Dr. Hayes whispered, adjusting the IV line. "Her physical recovery will take time, Ethan. But her mind... her spirit is intact. She recognized you instantly."
Amelia shifted on the gurney, her dark brown eyes opening slowly. The weak, flickering red lights of the secret annexe were gone, replaced by the clean, warm interior of the medical transport. She looked up at Ethan, her thumb faintly stroking his knuckles.
"Lily..." Amelia’s voice was raspy, dry as paper, but filled with a fierce maternal energy. "Is she... is she really safe, Ethan? Nora... Nora took her every time I tried to reach her..."
"She is waiting for us at home, my love," Ethan said softly, his voice thick with emotion as he leaned down to press a gentle kiss to her forehead. "Nora is in federal custody. Victor is in handcuffs. The nightmare is over."
"Nora told me... she told me you remarried," Amelia whispered, tears welling at the corners of her eyes. "She said you forgot us... that you moved on..."
Ethan’s chest tightened with a sudden, agonizing pain. He squeezed her hand tightly. "I never stopped looking for answers, Amelia. Every day of the last seven years was a lingering death without you. I buried an empty coffin because I had to... but my heart died in that fire with what I thought was my family."
When the heavy iron gates of the Blackwood mansion swung open, the grand estate was illuminated like a fortress. Armed security personnel lined the perimeter, but inside the grand foyer, the lights were warm and welcoming.
The rear doors of the transport opened, and Ethan helped the medical team roll Amelia’s gurney across the marble threshold.
Standing near the grand staircase, wrapped in an oversized yellow cardigan and holding Dr. Hayes’s hand, was Lily.
The seven-year-old child froze. Her dark eyes, so remarkably similar to Amelia's, widened as she saw the woman on the gurney.
Amelia sat up slowly, ignoring the sharp sting of the IV in her arm. Her breath hitched in her throat, a soft, heartbroken sob escaping her lips. "Lily..."
Lily took one small, hesitant step forward, then another. The yellow cardigan flapped around her knees as her pace quickened. "Mommy...?"
"Oh, my baby girl..." Amelia held out her arms, completely unconcerned with her weak muscles or burn scars.
Lily sprinted across the polished marble, throwing her small arms around Amelia’s neck. Mother and daughter collapsed into each other’s embrace, weeping openly. Seven years of forced separation, of dark rooms, lies, and terror, dissolved in the span of a single, agonizingly beautiful moment.
Ethan knelt beside them, wrapping his broad arms around both of his girls, burying his face into Amelia’s neck while Lily’s tiny hands clutched his collar.
"We are whole again," Ethan vowed into the quiet warmth of the foyer, his voice unwavering. "And tomorrow, the world will know it."
By 4:00 AM, the mansion’s primary study had been converted into a command center.
While Amelia slept peacefully upstairs in the master bedroom with Lily curled up securely at her side, Ethan sat at his mahogany desk with Marcus and his chief legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton.
"Victor’s legal team filed an emergency motion at midnight," Pendelton reported, sliding a stack of legal documents across the desk. "They are citing your 'unexplained absence' during the evening as grounds to execute a corporate proxy vote at 9:00 AM today. Under the Blackwood Family Trust charter established by your grandfather, if you fail to attend the annual shareholder assembly or yield to a vote of no-confidence, Victor automatically assumes permanent control of the board."
"They think I'm dead," Ethan said coldly, swirling a glass of iced water. "Or at least incapacitated by the digitalis."
"Precisely," Pendelton nodded. "Victor’s lead attorney, Richard Vance, is currently at the city precinct trying to post bail for Victor on 'trumped-up charges.' They are attempting to suppress the arrest record until after the 9:00 AM board vote."
Ethan stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-soaked gardens.
"Let them try to cover it up," Ethan said, a dangerous, razor-sharp smile touching his lips. "I don't want Victor arrested in a dark alley or quiet precinct room. I want him exposed in front of every shareholder, every board member, and every major news outlet in the country."
"Boss," Marcus stepped forward, holding a tablet. "We managed to decrypt the hard drives recovered from the North District Annexe. It’s worse than we thought. Victor didn't just target Amelia and Lily. He has been systematically embezzling from the company’s charitable trust funds to bribe state officials and maintain his private network."
"Pack every file," Ethan commanded. "Prepare three physical evidence binders and load the digital telemetry onto the boardroom main display."

Ethan turned back to face his team, his charcoal suit pristine, his eyes burning with absolute, lethal purpose.
"The Blackwood empire was built on honor," Ethan declared quietly. "Today, we burn out the rot."
